Famke Janssen
Born Famke Janssen was born on 1 January 1964 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Named after the Frisian word for “little girl”, she always felt something of an outsider at home, as her sisters, Natalya and Lucy, were blonde and blue-eyed. Her parents split when she was 16.
Big break I Fluent in Dutch, German, French and English, she was studying economics when “discovered” on an Amsterdam street and signed to a modelling agency. However, she soon came to detest the fake glamour of the fashion world – “I’m often amazed that I’ve come out as normal as I am. It’s a weird job.”
Education Relocating to the United States in 1984, she took a course in literature and creative writing at Columbia University. She received her master’s degree in 1992. Yet she also harboured ambitions to act and studied in New York and Los Angeles.
Debut She made her screen debut opposite Jeff Goldblum in Fathers and Sons (1992). That same year she guest-starred as Kamala in The Perfect Mate episode of Star Trek: the Next Generation. At 5ft 11in, she towered over Patrick Stewart, who had to stand on a box for their scenes together.
Big break II Despite misgivings that it would lead to typecasting, she agreed to play the ex-fighter pilot Xenia Onatopp in Pierce Brosnan’s first outing as James Bond, Goldeneye. Refusing to be seduced by fame, she began seeking out challenging roles in the likes of City of Industry (1997), Celebrity (1998) and Circus (2000).
Significant others She was still at college when she met writer/director Todd “Kip” Williams. They were together for 11 years before their divorce last year. Subsequently, she’s dated such as heart-throbs as Ben Affleck
TV slots In addition to early stints in Star Trek and Melrose Place, she’s appeared in several episodes of Ally McBeal, as Robert Downey Jr’s ex-wife.
Rejected Having refused the female lead in sci-fi sequel Terminator 3, she recently had to drop out of Men in Black 2 because of a family illness.
Sidelines As befits an English major, she not only writes poetry, but also short stories, which she admits to being so dark that she sometimes finds them hard to re-read.
Pet hates She hates perfect teeth and plastic surgery so much she thinks they ruin Hollywood romances – “In European films, people are just the way they are. It gives me a complex when I look at all those perfect people.”
Guilty pleasures In a recent interview, she confided her must-have desert-island luxuries: sunblock, books, some beach games and her secret vice, black liquorice.
What she says Not one of Tinseltown’s biggest fans, she holds superstardom in low esteem – “Life is tough enough. Who needs to be reminded every single day ‘I’m not A-list, oh my God’? It’s like an airborne infection. And it spreads really fast.”
What they say “She’s just kind of gangly and gawky and real. You can see the little girl in her.” Valerie Breiman, the writer/director of Love and Sex.

Do you know that Famke Janssen is also a little bit fed up with Hollywood. Right now, she is going to play in the new Dutch movie ''Soldaat van Oranje" (Soldier of the Royal Family)? Famke Janssen is just like every average Dutch person. Very very very ordinary and with no Hollywood pretentions! Just a ''gewone Hollandse meid". And that also counts for many other Dutch actors and actresses who made it in America. For instance Rutger Hauer! He refused to do a leading role in ''The Gldiator". Why, asked the Hollywood press! You are stupid! No said Mr Hauer, I''m myself and I'm not in the mood right now to play in such a movie. We also know Jeroen Krabbe. He palyed a very nice role in TLD, but right now he is also concentrating on the qualitative better European movies. He also thinks that Hollywood is not his kind of place to work in. Right now he made the very good movie "The Discovery Of Heaven". Here in the Netherlands it''s a big success.
But don''t forget! James Bond movies are NOT Hollywood movies. They are e very good tradition! Because of Bond, we have many new franchises like the ''Die Hard'' and ''Lethal Weapon'' series. But also the movies of the following series, ''The Saint'', ''The Avengers'', "Mission Impossible'' (pity, what they have done with this franchise), "Charlie''s Angels'' and you can go on a very long time, are results of the succes of James Bond

Wouldn't Famke be perfect if the oft mooted new movie version of Peter O'Donnell's Modesty Blaise ever happens. She was born for the part!
