I hope, and this is just my wish, that with all the clout Brosnan seems to have. Now that he's an established Bond, and he did appear to influence TWINE dramatic turn. I hope he gets the next film even more character driven and less explosions, perhaps Brosnan will have the clout to get Casino Royale filmed properly. Is that too much to ask?

Since P&W are taking Bond back to his roots, they would be the perfect duo to adapt the novel, faithfully I would hope. Or as close as possible, since the end isnt a proper finale(at least in Bond film sense). Maybe I'm dreaming, but I think Casino Royale would be a great film, maybe leave it for Brosnans last, let him go out with a bang.

I hope it's not next because I'm not quite done my, er, fan-fic screenplay. It's quite good considering...and I've managed to add in more 'stuff' and put Smersh back in business.

It would be a good intro to another string of movies featuring the same bad guys.

I have to agree with you, Jimmy, a serious adaptaion of Casino Royale is long over due. And it would be great for Pierce to be the one to do it. I hope Mr. Brosnan realises that if he really wants to film CR that now is the time to ask, while he is in talks for the contract to star in his fifth and weilds a bit more power.

We have discussed the possiblity of CR being filmed before (in this thread and another that I can't seem to find). And it really comes down to a couple of things:
How much stigma the name Casino Royale holds.
And how faithful can you be to the book.

they can update Casino Royale to be Union story probably and then go into a whole series of Union stories like they did with SPECTRE (Dr. No, From Russia With Love)

Casino Royale would need to be updated (much as I'd love to see it done as a period piece). Le Chiffre's background as a displaced person could be retained-perhaps have him from somewhere in the Balkans- but he clearly can't be a Soviet agent anymore. Perhaps he could have embezzled funds from the Russian Mafia, which he's trying to recoup at the gaming tables. The question is, why would MI6 become involved?
Vesper Lynd would need to change as well. The Bond-girl-turning-out-to-be-a-traitor twist has been used very effectively in TWINE. Bond teamed up reluctantly with a female MI6 agent is being used, it seems, in Bond20.
Lastly, a grander villain's scheme would need to be found. A bit of embezzling hardly cuts it these days.
Nevertheless, I'm sure that key sequences, characters and locations could be preserved, as well as that very nasty torture scene (unless it's been pinched for Bond20).

I think the book could be pretty closely adapted while being updated. Then the plot could be grafted onto a larger scheme. Much like The living Daylights short story took up the first part of the film adaption.

I've been dabbing at the screenwriting thing and come up with 2/3rds of Casino Royale.
Here's a synopsis:
PTS is the 'making' of 007 with his assassination of the SMERSH radio operator in New York (Felix helping him). Although there's no indication that this is when he gets the 00 prefix, just fuel for the main plot. Le Chiffre's 'adept[ness] at driving fast cars' is augmented into his being a money source for SMERSH, a now non-Soviet operated organisation. Le Chiffre always wins at cross country races in France/Germany etc. and MI6 comes up with the idea to get a lead on SMERSH by making him lose a race (thereby causing SMERSH activity to increase).
The next part isn't worked out, but then it turns out Le Chiffre has kept SMERSH at bay and is re-funding himself by gambling at Casino Royale on the Atlantic coast of France. Vesper's Polish boyfriend is still a snag, where does he get captured, any ideas? And SMERSH still operates under a secret conspriatory team of the KGB and...CIA (those bastards have got to be uncovered somehow; Felix talks about his chage to the DEA because of corruption maybe).
The rest follows the book closley, and of course: 'Yes dammit, I said *was*. The bitch is dead now.'

So what do you think? Waste of time, or wonderful update?

Your Casino Royale adaptation sounds great. I've written a Casino Royale script treatment adapting the novel which should be on this site soon. Tell me what you think when you read it.

Sorry Jimmy Bond, but I doubt you will ever see Casino Royale on film without
1) More locations
2) More charcters
3) The addition of some set piece action sequences
4) A more suitable title for the mass audience
5) An extra hour's worth of story

It's hardly CR when you add all that is it? The closest we may come is snippets of the story used in a new movie, or maybe a characters name.

Except #4, isn't that pretty much what they did with Live And Let Die? ;D
