For many years, I, like many Bond fans, wondered if any actual lyrics had ever been written for the instrumental theme to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service.'' Did Hal David throw some together while he was penning the other songs? Were they so bad that they had to be thrown out? Or was the task of shoehorning the title into the lyrics so daunting that Mr. David threw in the towel and ran away, crying like a little girl?

Well, I finally decided to myself, if no one else wants to do it, I will, just as a writing exercise. And here they are. I'm not saying they're wonderful lyrics, but there are some places here and there where they actually make sense and rhyme a bit. You can imagine my surprise.

These lyrics are copyright 2002 by Rodney Richey. They are not intended to be anything but a poem, an ode to the character of James Bond. (All this is my way of avoiding any lawsuits. I make no claims on any original tune and assert no rights other than those as the author of these verses.) But, should they happen to be singable to a familiar tune, albeit, at a slower, "Goldfinger"-like pace, well, what can a guy do about that?

Enjoy, and I look forward to your comments, criticisms, complaints, caterwauling, etc.

Wade
OHMSS (KILL TO SURVIVE)
By Rodney Richey

On and on ... out where the storms begun,
On his own ... can’t even find the sun,
On he fights ... until the fight is won,
He fights to survive; it's the battles that keep him alive.

Who’s to say ... just where this night will lead,
To betrayal ... or onto majesty?
Will he have ... all of the time he needs?
He serves to survive; it's the secrets that keep him alive.

One good night ... to last ’til the light of day.
One goodbye ... to last ’til his dying day.

Nothing but death remains.
Into the storm again.

Hard and cold ... alone among the dead,
Haunted by ... all that was left unsaid,
Hungry for ... whatever lies ahead,
He kills to survive; it’s the memories that keep him alive.

No, I do think lyrics were created, yet they weren't used when they heard the track solely as an instrumental. That's what I have heard at least.

In this thread, there are some possible lyrics from the Blofeld's Cat site that possibly were considered:

Just adding some more to your thread here. :)

I'd love to hear the full lyrics, if there ever were some for the full track.

I don't understand. These ARE the full lyrics. But the music itself would need to be slowed a few beats for it to sound right.

No, I mean the full lyrics that were come up with by Hal David and the others, not any lyrics by Bond fans.

Ahh, I see. I misunderstood. Yes, I tried to contact Mr. David, and I also had queries out to Mr. Black, Mr. Barry, et al. To my utter lack of surprise, no one wanted to discuss this. It'd be great, thought, if someone would produce any original lyrics, even unfinished ones.

What would ALSO be terrific is if the title sequences from the films, with the credits removed, were to be issued on DVD as, essentially, the VIDEOS of the title songs, maybe with clips from the films edited in. It'd be cheap to produce, and I know I'd buy one. I even once thought it might be neat to ask various filmmakers to take the title songs, have been rerecorded by contemporary vocalists, then film videos for them. But that's WAY too much money for a tiny hope of a payoff. I doubt anyone would bankroll it.

Well, it's a whole revenue stream that MGM and EON have ignored. Those songs are gold.

I'm renewing this thread only because I want to get as much feedback as possible on my work. So, excuse this obvious attempt to draw attention to myself. I'm usually not this needy. :)

I think it was maybe ten years ago (if not more) that I had written these lyrics to go with the title song. I've never been 100% satisfied with them, BUT I often can't help hearing them in my head when I listen to the song.

If a song about "Supercalafragalisticexpialidotious" could be made for Mary Poppins I can't see why a little title like "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" can't be created.

Hi everyone! A long running topic but the lyrics by Rodney never ceased to amaze me. After two years of work, I realized a dream in singing all the Bond title themes...along with the OHMSS theme! I used the lyrics by Rodney and recorded two versions. The latest one, just finished today is the music video version. I invite you all to have a look at the video and let me know what you think. Should be the first time ever to hear OHMSS with lyrics.

OHMSS (Kill to Survive) - Music video

Enjoy!!

Wow, that was a year ago? Holy crap!

By the way, Wade, I can almost hear some of the lyrics being used in a modern OHMSS trailer voiced-over by Don LaFontaine; just think: B)

He fights to survive...
It's the battles...
That keep him...
A-LIVE!

Now you're just trying to get me excited. (BTW ... back when cute outgoing messages were in style, I'd have given a year's pay to have LaFontaine do mine: "In a world ... where loose lips sink ships ... where words are useless ... where talk is cheap ... one man needs ... your message. Leave it at the tone ... and before you know it ... HE'S BACK!"

Wade,

hat's off! I love the lyrics you composed! I think you did a wonderful job creating a verbal parallel to the pause at the center of every four-bar phrase. As with the plot of "Casino Royale", the verses are punctuated with ellipses.

My respect for writers of verse has increased exponentially over the last few days as I've been trying to compose a rhyming epitaph for the 'dearly departed minor character' thread, or whatever it's called. I'm beginning to despair of its ever being completed (without my landing in Bedlam).

Again, great job with the lyrics. I'm a big fan of the Armstrong interlude but I always thought it strange that OHMSS never had a title song with words. Should history be revised, yours get my vote.

with admiraion,
Aziz
