I rented it two nights ago. A terrific film! It's a spy genre thriller written and directed by David Mamet (I'll give him credit for the brilliance of THE EDGE, not that awful DAD director). This film came out in 2004 but was totally ignored except for some very positive reviews by Ebert and Roeper...

It stars Val Kilmer as a sort of CIA-secret service-paramilitary type guy who's mission is to recover the daughter of a high profile Politician(implied it was the President). The girl is kidknapped and sold into white slavery in the middle east...This film will also remind Val Kilmer fans why he had a career in the first place. This is easily his best film/work since Tombstone though I haven't seen all of his movies since then...He just seems to have faded into obscurity since Batman...

Anyway, I strongly reccomend it to anywone who likes a smart, serious, spy genre thriller... :)

I actually just recently rented that, Tarl, whilst recovering from some dental work. I was quite impressed with it - it's in my opinion a must see. As for the reason it was ignored, Tarl, that may have something to do with the fact that it was an intelligent thriller, and it required the viewers complete attention. Not something most audiences appreciate anymore. :)

Thanks for the heads up Tarl!!! :) I've long been a fan of Mamet's work, the cadence of his scripts is so quirky it's infectious!!! :) I'm also keen on Kilmer and it's high time I see something new from the man. I'll definitely check this one out!! :)

I saw this film last week. A very sleek and intelligent action film. I was really impressed with it, along with Val Kilmer. The guy may be a prick sometimes, but you have to give it to him for putting in performances like this.

I saw this at BEST BUY a couple of weeks ago but I didn't pick it up because I had never heard of it. Maybe I'll give it as spin.

That's also how I sometimes see him as an actor. Not one of my all time favorites. But sleek action films with a cool pace are good, maybe this is one to try.

Yes indeed. This sounds like a good candidate to hear some reviews on firstly.

I've seen it twice now and thoroughly enjoyed it. Last night I watched it for a second time though with a group of friends and was the only one who seemed to really understand what was going on. During the scene where Kilmer's character meets the woman at the Presidents house (I assume, though we are never told it was the president) there was a lot of plot exposition and even though the plot is essentially explained three times in three different ways in a matter of minutes (I counted them), some of the people watching it with me still didn't get it and so we had to stop the movie so I could explain it to them.

Of course one of the people had had a bottle of wine already and kept on pointing out non-existent plot holes.

A thoroughly entertaining spy flick though, I liked it much more than I thought I would, especially the toughness of the characters. The lines:

WOMAN: I am entitled to my lawyer.
AGENT: You're entitled to s*it. You're entitled to tell me what you know!

Really, an excellent political thriller!

A great film. Is Val Kilmer box office poison? I thought he was excellent in this film-his best work since Tombstone...

I wouldn't say box office poison at all. He just has not done some huge hits recently, IMO. (Of course Tombstone was quite good, even for being quite a while ago.)
