Ed Harris (aka Genrewriter) has provided us with this wonderful new look at Diamonds Are Forever. Now posted on the CBn main page.

First off, I have enjoyed many of your movies. You are a truly talented actor, director, and now a writer, I should say.

DAF is much better than its remake, DAD, despite what some people might say. Thanks for the great analysis.

I really liked the article however I had a problem with the following bit:

[quote]"This could be because Bond basically smashed the organization in Thunderball and You Only Live Twice and possibly finished off whatever was left between You Only Live Twice and On Her Majesty

Great job Genrewriter!
DAF isn't on the top of my Bond list at all, but I did enjoy reading your article. :)

Genrewriter, it is now my turn to congratulate you on this truly inspired, informative, and all together outstanding article.

You've made me look a bit more at the Bond film which has always been one of the most dificult for me to rank.

Thanks for the kind words. I think I might tackle either Never Say Never Again or Live and Let Die next. Probably won't get started until later in the summer though. :)

DAF was the first Bond film I saw when it was on its first run in early 1972 when I was just 5. It remains one of my personal favorites to this day even if it gets slammed by a lot of fans, but I also notice it's had its share of admirers as well. Thanks for the appreciation of it as well as the artwork.

A great article. Very honest and accurate about the overall film.
But I would disagree on three points.
One, I think the third act really dooms the film to the point that it is almost no use watching the first 2/3.
Two, I think the screenwiters and director could have done a better job in story telling to bring the Blofeld/Spectre story line/theme thru out the Bond films to a fitting conclusion. It would have made a great Connery swan song.
The fact that you filled in a lot of gaps with your great analysis shows that a lot was missing. Which leads to ...
Three, I believe there should have been more of a nod to the death of Tracy as depicted in On Her Majesty's Secret Service(OHMSS) in the begining of Diamonds Are Forever (DAF).
This could have been easily done by showing Bond/Connery looking at a photo of Tracy or even her wedding ring or another momento before going after Blofeld. This would have set up DAF better than what is currenty on film. Right now there is two generations who cannot put together the events of OHMSS and DAF. If it wasn't for the fact I was such a Bond nut I wouldn't have put two and two together myself! If you ask 100 people under 35 if they knew Connery left the role of Bond and came back after Lazenby I would bet you could barely find 10 out of 100 who knows that fact.

Once again a great article. Look foward to you doing more.
Hint: Casino Royale ( 1950's Barry Nelson TV version)
Dr. No thru OHMSS
Live & Let Die thru The Spy Who Loved Me
For Your Eyes Only & Octopussy
Licence To Kill & Golden Eye
Maybe Die Another Day ( The jury is still out) :)

I always liked "Diamonds Are Forever" for its morbid sense of humor, particularly as presented through the Wint and Kidd characters, who bear practically no resemblence to their literary counterparts. The humor in the film isn't quite slapstick. All-in-all, very entertaining. And Las Vegas is such a natural location for a Bond film, it's almost like a Bond capital.

p.s. Although SPECTRE is not mentioned by name in the film, the screenplay uses the name to identify Blofeld's henchmen throughout the story.

That's a great article: everything a good fan article should be and more.

But I respectfully disagree with basically every line :)

Seeing the DBS getting loaded was very cool though. Notice, however, that the little 'bar' is missing from the 'slot' on the front wing? Brobably just a spare wing and the bonnet in that shot I think. Cheap :)

Great article.

When I was 8 I saw this in the theaters. It was my first Bond film since wanting to see one since probably 1967!

It being my first I have always had a week spot for it.

I completely agree with many of your observations particularly:

- how good the elevator fight is. It's up there as one of the best in the series.

- Norman Burton. Is there a worse Felix Leiter ever? (Maybe Felix's grandfather from Goldfinger but I'd still take him over the "Charismaless" Mr. Burton.)

- I also love Bond getting into Whyte's labs. I love the hole "Klaus Hergershimer, G-Section" stuff particularly BOn'd feigned indignation for teh little people when Metz wants him out of the lab.

-I agree that the 3rd act falls apart but I still get a thrill when Bond walks over the plexiglass map saying "from Maine to Baja California" and Whyte jumps up yelling "Baja!? I don't own anything in Baja!" Cut ot the oil rig.

One questions Ed, are you THAT Ed Harris?

What movies has Genrewriter Directed? :)

When I read that I thought, for a second, "Is Genrewriter Ed Harris." (As in Ed Harris who starred in The Truman Show and StepMom :) )

Then I remembered his photo.
