seen Wind and the Lion last night,as an adventure and action film i rate it as one of the finest but what bothering me is the potrayal of a muslim person played by Connery is totally wrong .

1. the most disturbing image seen many time is the way the muslim in the film pray ,muslim dont pray like that .they should just cut the scene because its a very sensitive issue and it could hurt muslim feeling.

2.Mrs Pedacris asking Raisuli .What is your christian name ? and Raisuli answer My Christian Name is Mulay . This is another aspect of wrong potrayal of islam in a hollywood film.Raisuli is a muslim how the hell could he have a christian name. The dialogue is a total :).

3. Raisuli told Mrs Pedacris he pray to Mecca five times a day.FYI Muslim people dont pray to Mecca they pray to Allah.

The christian name stuff you are remembering wrong. She DOES ask him about his christian name, but he doesn't understand her. Finally when she says your first name or something to that effect, he reels off ALL of his names ... Muhli Achmed Mohammed El-Rasuli The Magnificent, Lord of the Riff, Sultan to the Berbers.

I've seen this movie a LOT of times (caught it in the theater with Roger Moore's GOLD on a night when my folks thought the theater had a Bond double bill, believe it or not!), and I memorized Connery's speech at the end (via letter) to Brian Keith's Roosevelt before I got out of high school. John Millius really used to know how to write! Between the dialog here, and the 'make my day' speech he added to DIRTY HARRY and the INDIANAPOLIS scene in JAWS, Millius seems to have his finger in most great scenes from the 70s.

As for Muslim accuracy ... the history of the piece is completely BS anyway. The Raisuli was actually a wise man who lived on a mountain somewhere, not an arab. And the Pedecaris woman abducted by an arab during this era didn't exist ... a man WAS taken, but this movie is just using select elements from history and mixing them together, not trying to be a reenactment. I don't cut MISSIPPI BURNING much slack, because they represent that as history when the truth was that the FBI just bribed info from folks, but W&L is just a fun big adventure, not subject to that kind of scrutiny.

It's just a movie. If it offends, don't watch it.

I give a toss about offending practitioners of that religion, (or any religion for that matter).

I do like the architecture though...

I love this movie. So glad it's finally available on DVD letterboxed. Brain Keith is great as TR.

Eh? What's not wrong with offending Muslim sensibilities? :)

I've not seen THE WIND AND THE LION, but I reckon it'll have to go a very, very long way indeed to beat the utterly nauseating RULES OF ENGAGEMENT in the offensiveness stakes.

I love this movie also....I think Milius provided a great audio commentary. The movie actually sparked my interest in researching the actual events that inspired the movie.

There are definitely innacuracies on Theodore Roosevelt which are irritating, but done just because the filmakers seem to think he was a funny guy worth making a comedy out of. Teddy Roosevelt never climbed on a desk and growled like a bear, infact he had a serious personality.

About Connery, I guess his character beheading those guys has proven accurate because of the grotesque events of the past week.

I've seen most of The Wind and the Lion which didn't do much for me, so a better Connery picture from the mid-seventies is The Man Who Would Be King which starred Michael Cain.

I still prefer WIND over KING, though the triple crown of those films along with ROBIN & MARIAN during the mid 70s really show Connery at his peak for me.

I always liked "The Wind and the Lion in Winter". It's great to see Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton together.

Same goes for "Live And Let Die Another Day". Moore and Brosnan have great chemistry.

You are dead on. Those three films and performances reach a rare peak that any actor would be proud of. Though they are so close in quality, I would rank them "Robin And Marion", "The Man Who Would Be King" and "Wind And The Lion".

This is on Film4 on Sunday and Tuesday this week, if you live in the UK (and have freeview!). I don't know how often its on TV, but this is the first time I've noticed it and I'm quite looking forward to it, not least as it is currently not available in the UK.

Surely this comment deserves a thread of its own?
