I recently won an eBay auction for a package of Bond books, one of them was what I thought to be a Thunderball US 1st edition by Viking. However, the book has no copyright page and there doesn't appear to be any pages removed. The dj also seems to be laminated, maybe even a copy. Another thing, the title page says Thunderball with 1964 written under it however thunderball was first printed in 1961, which leads me to beleive that it is a later printing, but on the 'also by author' page it only lists the books up to thunderball and the blurb about Fleming on the back flap says the same thing. No where on the dj, spine, boards (which are light blue), flaps, or anywhere else does it say anything about a publisher. There is also the interesting piece of Asian writing, not sure if it's Japanese or what on the inside flap. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Please see attached scans.

One other side note, besides the title page, there are also 2 other pages (one before the title page and one after the table of contents that are blank except for 'Thunderball' printed at the top.

Well, I guess technically you did get a hardback, just not a book. :)

I pray this didn't cost a lot.

Is there anyway you can return it for a refund?

Eek, that's a bit of nice misleading that person possible pulled off.

I strongly recommend you let the eBay team know, they might be able to do something. Although I hear they're not very helpful sometimes.

Not really, I only paid like $5 and it came with two other books. So it's not a total loss.

I'm a Mav's fan so the Spurs don't really matter that much to me, I'm for the Lakers now anyway. Shaq is the man.

So if it isn't a first edition US, it's not a US book club (I have that already), and Bondian.com lists no US/UK/International hardback editions printed in 1964 then what is it? Does the US Viking First DJ have that Japanese on the inside flap, I doubt it? Can anyone translate what it says? Also, no ISBN #. Maybe it's some Asian couterfeit book.

That might be some foreign proof version that was unused, very odd that is.

Can anyone translate what it says?

It's the addresses in Taibei of the publisher, agent and printer. There's also a line (second from the bottom) reading: "First edition, 20 July of the 53rd year of the Republic of China (Taiwan) (1964)".

My mistake, now that I checked I paid $9.99 for the lot. Here is the link to the page.

http://cgi.ebay.com/...gory=26181&rd=1

It just describes the books as 'THUNDERBALL-HBDJ EARLY EDITION $3.95 PRICE IS ON THE UPPER RIGHT HAND SIDE OF DJ-DJ HAS A SMALL TEAR ON THE TOP'

So, a Taiwanese piracy huh... interesting. Thanks for all the helpful info everyone
