God! I'm tired of people of going goo goo gaga over Roger Moore!! I hear from my mom too much!! Roger's cool in all I admit, but he's nothing compared to the first Bond (no, not Barry Nelson) who started it all!! Sir Sean Connery, your the BEST BOND EVER! He was cool, handsome, dangerous, licensed to kill, had that Scottish burr and can kick everyone's :)! And he was funny too, for crying out loud! He may be a bastard now, but he's the only actor to win an Oscar!!

Go Sean! (This is a Sean Connery loyalty thread!!)

I love Sean Connery's portrayal of James Bond, my second favorite. My favorite performance from him has always changed in my opinion, but I really think his best film is Thunderball, and he gives some great performances in From Russia With Love and Thunderball.

But really though, If anything, Connery is the one that everyone goes 'goo goo gaga' over.

He was great in all his movies! But I think he gave his best and gave a more human potrayel in From Russia with Love. Ian Fleming was so spellbounded over Connery that he said it was hard to imagine someone else for the part!

No contest, Sean wins outright as the most entertaining Bond but not necessarily the best portrayal.

The reason I say Roger Moore is best is cause he fits the description of James Bond, and has been in the most 007 titles. Sean Connery is actually Scottish, you know, but there really isn't anything wrong with that. Roger Moore is just a little more bond, you know. (No offensh to Sean, however. He shertanly ish shwell.)

Amen, brother.

So acting doesn't matter, then? If the chap looks sort of like him and does a whole whack of films, then he's the best one? That's all?

What about 'always getting injured to show his human side then mowing down multiple enemies with a single gun, thus negating the attempt to humanize him and also always out for revenge because apparently Mi6 no longer handles world emergencies Bond'?

That would be Brozzers, by the way. :)

Oh, also...GO SEAN! And Rog. I switch back and forth on an hourly basis.

Nobody did it like Sean. None of his successors had the charisma, the charm, the sex appeal, the believability, or the masterful delivery of Sir Sean Connery. Not that I don't enjoy the other fellas.

Sean was great as Bond. He said his lines with a lethal purr and he buckets of energy in his portrayal. His flirtations with Moneypenny were the most memorable (I love the moment when he dances with her in Dr No) while any Bond who faces Blofeld, Goldfinger, Largo and Red Grant is worthy of classic status. I love the others (especially Pierce), but Sean's films were and are classics.

For me,Sean Connery will always be the REAL James Bond and all of the other actors who followed him are just that--actors playing James Bond. They're all individually talented but they don't have a patch on Connery--at least not as James Bond. And I say this as someone who likes all of the James Bond actors.

Sean Connery has the charisma that no one else has. When the Sean Connery James Bond walks into a room everyone notices. All the men want to be him and all the women want to sleep with him.The force of his presence is amazing.Animal magetisim. No other Bond actor has been able to recreate this--no one.But Eon's always attempted to reprise this quality with their other 007s.But you either have it or you don't and Connery has this in spades. It's a real movie star charisma and that's impossible to portray. After all, it's not a learned talent.

Another thing Connery brings to Bond is sheer physical size and a very dangerous edge-when he hits somebody they stay down. And for a big man he moves quickly and gracefully. He can be very charming--even elegant--but he also looks like he could successfully kill someone, and this is a problem facing some of the other Bond actors. They're all handsome and they each look great in formal clothes but they're a harder sell as the executioner Double-O Seven is supposed to be.They manage to put this across in different ways but not as easily or as convincingly as Connery did.

And the Sean Connery James Bond is handsome without being pretty.Connery's a leading man with rugged good looks--the kind of man most men can easily identity with and the type of fellow most of the ladies find appealing. He won't be caught checking himself out in any of the mirrors he passes. This is important because Bond is a hardened man-a cynical individual who lives in a dangerous world. He knows he'll probably die on the job at some point.A ruggedly handsome face more easily suggests this than a classically handsome one.And aside from Timothy Dalton--who, as 007, clearly looks as if he could have magically stepped out of one of the James Bond novels--Sean Connery is the actor who comes the closest to resembling Ian Fleming's descriptions of James Bond. The others don't.

And then there's the sardonic wit.Connery was terrific at delivering the one liners. He didn't pause and wait for a reaction but rather moved on.And his quips were funnier-more thoughtful- than the majority of the ones in the other Bond movies delivered by the successor actors. But that's also because the writing was often better--they were aimed at an adult audience, not children. The double entendres were frequently cleverer. And then there's the highly distinctive speaking voice-the lisp making it immediately recognizable.Deep, masculine and ideally suited to his image.Like Cary Grant before him,Connery gradually created a unique and unmistakable accent all his own.

Of course,Sean Connery wasn't perfect by any means but he brought something to the Bond role that no one else ever has or could despite their talents.Sheer force of personality.Maybe as with most actors it's only a public persona-no actor reveals his true face to the public-but regardless he really left his mark on this role.Connery owns James Bond in a way no other actor ever can.And by virtue of having played 007,Sean Connery became a genuine international superstar at a time when there weren't very many left.At the time he came along many of the older ones were dying out or retiring. And Connery still remains a major star--and that's a remarkable testament to his talent and his popularity.

Sean Connery was very fortunate-and to some degree even cursed-by his success with this role.He introduced it and he played it extremely well-most notably in the first four films of the series, each of them classics--movies that set the style and tone for every other one that followed.Films that explored almost every possible direction 007 could go in(short of getting married or going into outer space). And for the most part, these were very well written.Connery became the most popular actor in the world-long before People Magazine existed, much less began selecting them.

But Connery was so good in this role that he also became typecast in a way no other Bond actor has ever been.It took him years to be accepted in other parts. To many of today's younger audiences the original four James Bond movies probably look quaint--old,antiques maybe but they are the real deal--the movies that started it all.The big original cinematic action adventures.Huge influences on the world's cinema. The most popular movie franchise. There wouldn't be a James Bond series today without them. They were the first true event movies-long before Star Wars or the Indiana Jones films. And they're still among the best movies of all time--and I sincerely doubt they would be anywhere as fine if Sean Connery hadn't played James Bond.No one else can match him in this role. He's the real 007.THE James Bond.

And I say this as someone who likes all of the actors who've played James Bond.

I must respectfully disagree. Connery made the role fantastic, Moore I think, took it to his own magnificent level.

Fine.I respect that.Of all the actors who've played 007, Sir Roger Moore looks and generally acts the least like Ian Fleming's literary James Bond. That doesn't mean he hasn't given some very entertaining performances as Bond. However,I think he will always be the greatest Simon Templar of all time.I think The Saint is his finest part. The Saint is to Roger Moore what James Bond is to Sean Connery--his signature role. And no other actor can top him with it.Still, Roger always be regarded as a very good James Bond. He was very wise to reshape the role to suit himself as much as possible. His Bond is a lighter and happier man.And Roger Moore is easily the handsomest man to play Bond--more than Pierce Brosnan.Roger's 007 isn't Fleming's dark and moody 007 at all, but his more outgoing take on the character works well for him. He's often an underrated actor.Comedy's hard to do.Comparing Roger to his friend Sean is like comparing apples and oranges. It's pointless. We can like them both and for very different reasons.

And I think of all the men who've played James Bond he's the first(if not the only)one I'd really like to meet. His on camera persona seems to be very much like his off camera one. He's had a long career playing heroes--long before becoming James Bond III.But the most heroic thing Roger's ever been involved with is his unstinting work for UNICEF.It's not something he does for publicity or some he's contractually obligated to do.It's something he truly feels he has to do and it's something he wants to do.And that gives this Saint a real halo in my eyes.It always will. His knighthood was well deserved and ,in my opinion,it was long overdue.

That said, much as I enjoy Roger's turns as Bond--especially his rare serious one in For Your Eyes Only,(I'm not a big fan of A View to a Kill,Live and Let Die,and The Man With the Golden Gun,although each has a few isolated moments here and there),I still think Sean Connery is the more impressive James Bond-the actor best suited to the character--although I'm also mightily impressed with Timothy Dalton's rendition and always list him in second place.

But these are only movies after all,and every actor who's played 007 has brought something interesting and valid to their interpretations.

Yes indeed, he seems to be generally who he is, both on and off screen. He makes a fine actor.

I can also agree with your thoughts on all the actors though. :)
