Apparantly it was a theory going around at the time that a homsexual man cannot whistle. Of course, it was complete rubbish, much like many of the other theories that Fleming included in his works. eg. all intellectuals are homosexual.

It's just representative of the times.

I remember reading this also near the beginning of The Man With The Golden Gun my first time and was always puzzled by it.

Never knew it was an actual theory going 'round.

LOL,

That's one of those Fleming passges that makes me role my eyes, like almost anything to do with black people in LALD.

Your internal censor have kind of move past taht and stick with the story and Fleming's good points.

I can whistle, but not real well. Maybe it's because I'm metrosxual. :)

That's complete rubbish! That's just a made-up!

I can whistle... ok maybe a little bit!

Whatever Ian Fleming said was rubbish. I'm proud to be a hetrosexual!

This is as amusing as the lines in GF about women's homosexuality being based on them getting the vote and other 'masculine' powers, therefore making them unsure about their sexuality.

Fleming was such a product of his time.

The passage in the books states this was only a popular theory (amongst whom is not disclosed) at the time, which I imagine has been debunked.

Classic Fleming... right up there with the bit about women voters and lesbianism. I must say, you won't find that in Raymond Benson.

It's funny. Fleming was a smart guy. I've always had the opinion that he put this stuff into to not only humour but set his books apart and infuriate people

I have to agree. It's little touches like that, no matter how odd, that make the Fleming novels all the more interesting.
