When the range relaunched (after a brief time being called the 20th Century Classics), they omitted the word 'Modern' from the covers. They thought they would let the grey colour denote the Modern and differentiate it from the black spined range.Well, I have the paperbacks in front of me, and it says "Penguin Classics" on the spines (which are, admittedly, grey). The words "Penguin Modern Classics" are nowhere to be found.
They have now changed the design and reintroduced the word Modern.
I can see where the confusion lies, but at Penguin the grey spined books have always been considered Modern Classics.

Okay, but not everyone among the general public is aware of Penguin's traditions. If they wanted those two recent Fleming paperback omnibus editions to be considered part of the Penguin Modern Classics range, as opposed to the Penguin Classics range, "Penguin Modern Classics" is what ought to be on the spines, and not "Penguin Classics".I can see where the confusion lies, but at Penguin the grey spined books have always been considered Modern Classics.

Follow the link from John's article on the main page, which extremely helpfully takes one to Amazon, and scroll down from there.

Sure is the reproduction; the text stating the title and the author is moreorless unreadable. It's better - looks a bit blurred (may just be the reproduction on Amazon)...
Much better picture; he looks drunk in this one, as opposed to stoned.

For UK fans who don't have a complete set, Borders in UK are doing buy one get one free on this new set of Flemings, so ideal opportunity to start/complete the collection. Nice big displays, too, which is encouraging. Is anyone here at CBn buying this set? I'd like to know how they look in the flesh.
And the silver spines lined up against each other look jolly smart.

That said, I'd like to get the recent US paperbacks, just for those splendid Richie Fahey covers.
