Sean Connery made the right choice leaving Bond behind becuase when I look at Diamonds are Forever he just seems too old and uninterested. It doesn't feel like Bond, it feels like Sean Connery. If he stayed on, the films would have just gotten worse because of Sean's performance. It's because Sean left that the series continues to live. In the end, I'am glad Sean left and Moore came in.

Agreed BondIsMoore, while Connery was wonderful, his performance in Diamonds Are Forever, while still very good, was not as excellent as his past 5 Bond films. I think a new Bond was in store and I think it turned out quite well.

Sean should have done OHMSS and retired-he came back for the wrong film...I do like OHMSS with Laz just fine, as is though.

He should have left after TB. It's obvious he wanted too and that hurts his next 2 films. He seemed to be happier with NSNA though.

If they had done OHMSS after Thunderball, it would have been perfect, and made more sense. Connery, at that time, would have fit the character of Bond to a T. Look at how Bond is supposed to be at the beginning of OHMSS, and then look at Connery. The man would not have had to even act!

I guess at the end of the day it was worth him coming back for DAF just to here the little digs and 'in jokes' at the beginning of the film.

I especially like the one about how they get on just fine without him...

"Commander Bond, I understand you have been on holiday? Relaxing, I hope!"
"Oh, hardly relaxing, but most satisfying!"

"We do function in your absence, Commander!"

Ha, ha.

I don't know whether to be scared or not that I typed those quotes from memory.

I still would have loved to have seen him in Live and Let Die and The Man With The Golden Gun. Live and Let Die would have worked for his machismo and physicality versus Kananga, similar to what he did versus Largo. Golden Gun could have played on his age and style versus Scaramenga. With Moore, it was kind of "Eh, ok, it's the guy playing Bond," but with Connery it would have meant something deeper and more personal seeing these two guys go head to head.

Can't see Connery in Moonraker, though. Or Spy. Jaws? Fuhgetaboutit.

Indeed.

I'm, not even sure Connery would have been okay in The Man With The Golden Gun, obviously the script would probably have been changed around, but even though Moore hadn't settled into the role in that film fully, I thought he had a decent grasp of it, not sure what Connery would have done.

Connery should have left after DAF. He always bring a unique touch to all of his James Bond movies but at the time he just didn't seem to have what it takes to keep going on. Moore's arrival was needed. I do enjoy his return in NSNA, however. Two Bond movies in one year? After these 3 and six year breaks, that's close to heaven.

It was for the best that Sean Connery left after Diamonds Are Forever[/]. However much I adore Sean Connery in the James Bond role, it was clear during the making of [I]You Only Live Twice in 1967 that Sean Connery had enough of working for Broccoli and Saltzman.

Although Sean was, and is, very professional actor, I would much rather see an enthusiastic actor play James Bond than an actor who can hardly hide his contempt for the producers and is only there for the King's ransom they paid him.

I agree with your sentiments, Triton, but Sean Connery really should have left after Thunderball. I am well aware that during the filming of YOLT Connery was having marital problems and that he was hounded by the Japanese media, but I still regard his performance in YOLT as unprofessional. I am less critical of his performance in DAF. He looks more interested to me, and I believe that he adjusted his performance to suit the more jokey nature of the film.

I've heard that Connery was more laid back and he seems more into the role in DAF. Some fans disagree with this, but I think it's pretty apparent. In YOLT, he probably just wanted to get it all behind him; in DAF, he was to get paid even more if the shooting schedule ran over, so it's apparent he was more relaxed in the role.

And he was probably a little more interested in being able do the jokes as opposed to moving from action scene to action scene in YOLT.
