I'm sure this has all been asked before, but i have a few questions regarding vintage original Bond posters.

I'm looking to hang a few Bond posters around my apartment. I have a lot of the newer ones such as GE,TWINE,and TND(no DAD yet). I have really begun to take an interest in the posters for some of the older movies(particularly some of the foreign posters). Are they really worth the extraordinarily high prices that they go for? I'm one of those people who always go for the real thing instead of taking the cheap way out and getting reproductions or knockoffs, but in this instance i really dont see the benefit. For my needs the repros would serve the same purpose as the originals but at much less expense. Are there dramatic differences between repros and originals so that you can easily tell them apart? I'm sure knowing you have the original is a great feeling but with some of the prices they go for , not to mention having them professionally framed, it could seriously affect my financial situation. What have some of you done? The idea i've had is to get the reproductions of all the posters i want first, then gradually replace them with an original whenever i can.

Silly thread i know, but i'd just like to hear your opinions.

Not silly at all!

Yes, as I also collect the posters, reprints and originals, it's nice to have the originals if you can spare the high prices for which, I think, within reason, some of them are worth. eBay constantly has some pop up on there.

The errors are always possible for the reproductions, I used to have a reproduction of Golddinger poster, where such credit's were Robert Broccoli and the word available was spelled: 'avoaible'. Thankfully, I then got a correct version of the poster. So yes, watch out for the mistakes.

Like anything, it/they are only worth what you are willing to pay for them. But if you like "art" or "antiques", then there will be a pleasure derived from having the true thing on your wall in much the same way as someone prefers the original painting to the print of the painting to the poster of the print of the painting. It's a lifestyle choice at this point.

Of course there is always the investment angle but the prices are now so stratospheric that they probably can't go up much further even if you could afford an early Bond poster. As for the foreign ones, they can be found cheaper on the Movie Fair circuits at reduced prices to those found in galleries.

But all the early quads will have been snapped up at same for resale through the galleries so one is kind of stuffed now for that particular strand of the market.

As far as differences are concerned, spelling mistakes notwithstanding, I believe the repros are different sizes to the originals but if you just want an image, then I guess this won't matter a jot.

Cheers.

There are a number of people on here who are very interested in the original posters. There have been a number of threads on the posters also (particularly in the Roger Moore forum). I for one think the posters are worth the price!

A similar case can be made for 2nd edition hard covers and the like. Are you getting it for display, or as an investment?

I concur that the early Connery quads are getting out of hand - and sometimes foreign art is not only cheaper - it's better. Italian posters are particularly interesting.

I don't think there is any shame in buying repro - especially if it's for display purposes - otherwise you have to consider linenbacking, deacidification, ultraviolet protection, etc.

I think your plan of buying repros and gradually replacing them makes sense.

Ah yes, I see you've encountered it too?

Very annoying it was to see those huge mistakes.

Usually the repro posters are smaller than the originals, which makes them easier to frame as they are a more common size for pre-maid frames. Buying repros and then replacing them is one way of doing it, but for about $15-$20 for a good repro, you might just want to hold onto that money and get an original when you can. eBay is a good place to look as well as local out of the way shops. I recently picked up an original poster for Moonraker from a small mom & pop shop that is only open on weekends for $20! They usually don't sell anything like that just wanted to see if they could.
