Just finished watching Roger's film, "The Sea Wolves" on DVD. Good flick! Interesting, tense and well-written. There's also a bunch of Bond connections: Patrick Macnee and David Niven co-star with Rog and behind the camera folks include John Glen, Syd Cain, Leslie Bricusse, Matt Munro and Maurice Binder. Anyone seen this movie?

Here's the plot summary from IMDB:

This true story follows the exploits of a top secret British military mission to destroy Nazi radio ships in a neutral harbor during WWII. The daring plan is led by British Intelligence officers Col. Lewis Pugh (Gregory Peck) and Capt. Gavin Stewart (Roger Moore). Since the ships are in neutral territory, the British Military command, while encouraging the scheme, must deny any knowledge of it if it fails. Pugh & Stewart enlist the aid of retired officer Col. Bill Grice (David Niven) & some of his former soldiers. On the pretext of being on a fishing expedition, these seemingly drunken old men in civilian clothing must board & destroy 3 Nazi ships, whose radio transmissions have resulted in Nazi submarines sinking allied ships. While Stewart arranges a diversion on shore, Pugh & Grice carry out the dangerous raid on and destruction of the Nazi ships.

It was so-so. The producers tried to capture the elements that made The Wild Geese, their previous big hit, a success but unfortunately it didn't quite work. Never read the James Leasor book it was based on so I don't know how closely the story was followed.

It's one of my fave non-Bond Roger films! We see him in both a regular tux & white dinner jacket, plus <spoiler> Roger breaks a bad guy's neck with his bare hands!

I own this one on DVD too and it is one of the non-007 Roger Moore movies that I watch most regularly (the best IMO being "Ffolkes" aka "North Sea Hijack"). I think the chemistry between Gregory Peck and Roger Moore is surprisingly effective and its humor and action is entertaining. There are also, as pointed out already, a number of Bond connections.

to be honest I didn't like it that much.. I thought it was just ok. It felt like Roger was doing another film (007) at the sametime and he just did all his scenes at one time.

BUT as for ffolkes! I LOVE that film :)

Yes FFOLKES is an awesome movie...

I really was not keen on SEA WOLVES when I first saw it on its theatrical release, but it has grown on me over the years!

I guess I should pick it up if I see it again in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart. :)

I wasn't sure with the cover art from the theatrical poster.

Ffolkes, The Wild Geese, Sea Wolves, Escape to Athena - All Damn fine Roger "Non-Bonds". "Gold" is a good watch too. "Street People" has it's moments.

And let us not forget "Curse of the Pink Panther"

:)

Ffolkes Rocks! No question 4UEO.

If I ever should "retire" to a Scottish castle and train an anti-terrorist sea-air-land squad, are you in 4UEO?...You've got to like scotch, cats, and Muses. :)

004's in.

No...Really.

Hell G...

You were already on the original list,

"Timing underwater. Speed underwater. Gentlemen, only one man completed our operation on time yesterday...ME.

*HOLDING UP HAND GRENADE*

"Today gentlemen, you will all complete the exercise on time."

*Consults watch*

"You'll all hit the first marker 57 seconds from...NOW!"

Damn good stuff!

I like this film, real locations, real big screen stars with presence all together in one film, true characters - I have a lot of time for this movie.

Curiously, depending on how you look at it, I had the poster for this film on my wall when I was at university. One of the friends there spotted it and said that the Niven part was indeed his great uncle. No stories to tell as such but all recognised.

I agree....Roger made some great non-Bond movies in the late 1970s...Don't forget the Lee Marvin-Roger Moore World War 1 movie SHOUT AT THE DEVIL either.
