The story given below is quite interesting and really gives us an
insight into DECISION MAKING.

Which one will you choose?

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in
use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track,
the rest on the operational track. The train came, and you were just beside
the track interchange. You could make the train change its course to the
disused track and saved most of the kids.

However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused
track would be sacrificed.

Or would you rather let the train go its way?

Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make.

...

Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and
sacrifice only one child.

You might think the same way, I guess.

Exactly, I thought the same way initially because to save most of the
children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most
people would make, morally and emotionally.

But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the
disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place?

Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends
who chose to play where the danger was.

This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office,
community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is
often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or
ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the
minority are.

The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track
was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear
for him.

The friend who forwarded me the story said he would not try to change
the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the
operational track should have known very well that track was still in
use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens.

If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because
he never thought the train could come over to that track!

Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe.

If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all
passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by
sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people
to save these few kids.

While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need
to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the
right one.

Wow. That pretty much sums up me as a person.

That applies to everything in life also. That was heavily enlightening.

Thank you for bringing that here. I greatly appreciate that.

<mocking the upsettingly ignorant>

Me, at age ten: "....they always change things for movies. Like, you know, Sherlock Holmes never really said his famous line..."

60-something-year-old woman: "Oh, 'Dr. Livingstone, I presume? '"

....yeah, THAT'S it.

*facepalm*

I just found out that a guy from my church, whose family attends every week, was killed in active duty in Iraq.

May not be all that random, but I had nowhere else to say it. Please, direct your thoughts and prayers to the family of young Nick. We are all at a loss for words...

I just had THE most craptastic day at work. AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEE. And I have to do it all over again tomorrow, except it'll be worse because I have to run the register.

KILL ME.

Also, all of you who go through clearance shoes and just throw the boxes on the floor for the employees to pick up later? I hate you. Passionately.

The only bright spot in my day? When they piped "Nobody Does it Better" through the speaker system. Really. Baby, you're the BEST.

Jessep: You want answers?
Kaffee (Tom Cruise): I think I'm entitled to them.
Jessep: You want answers?
Kaffee: I want the truth!
Jessep: You can't handle the truth! Son, we live in a world that has walls. And those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives...You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.
We use words like honor, code, loyalty...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent defending something. You use 'em as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to!
Kaffee: Did you order the code red?
Jessep: (quietly) I did the job you sent me to do.
Kaffee: Did you order the code red?
Jessep: You're goddamn right I did!!

yes, a great character movie indeed. Tom Cruise shows that he's an actor, not just another pretty Hollywood face.

Gotta be thankful when a Bond song comes on to save the day.

Don't I know it. "All Time High" came on later, too...hmmm. But I'm back working in my own department now, and everything's cool again. We get to listen to the same ten songs in strict rotation...oh, yes...lovely. At least the work itself doesn't suck so hard.

CRAB BATTLE!!!!!!

I recommend Metal Gear Crisis 1 and 2. In that order.

*unless you equip your cardboard box in a place that it would be noticed easily, like on stairs or right in front of a patrolling sentry.
