Last night I decided to put in my new DVD of You Only Live Twice. Everything was fine until I got to approximately 17 minutes into the film. The scene is where Bond first arrives in Japan. He walks past a beautiful girl who subsequently mutters something into her purse. Immediately I thought "Hey, there's something different about that. Didn't there used to be a subtitle?".

Then later in the film (during the bath scene) Tanaka says something in Japanese, again with no subtitles. Curiosity finally got the better of me and I checked my VHS copy; indeed there are subtitles.

Is this just a defect or is it like this on all copies?

It's a problem on many bond111. Some didn't have the subtitles burned onto them. From Russia With Love is another example.

Actually, there are no subtitles for those parts.

What I find extremely strange is the appearance of subtitles in TWINE. I swear the scene with Elektra and the priest had no subtitles in the cinema or on video, but the dvd has them. A few scenes in the missile silo have subtitles where i dont think they existed before as well.

I remember seeing them in the cinema and also on video when I rented it and then again when it was on TV. I don't know why they've replaced nearly all the original subtitle text with that naff Dvd stuff that disappears when you fastforward.

I've never seen the YOLT subtitles on any copy of the film that I've seen.

Oh, i couldve sworn id never seen them before.
I hate that some dvds take of the burnt of subtitles replace them with the dvd kind.
I notice on my Charlies Angels 2 dvd, there are sound effects that should match up with the subtitles appearing on screen. But since they are dvds subtitles, they just appear, and the sound effect is there for no reason whatsoever.
I think a similar thing happens on the DAD dvd when the subtitles show up saying Bond and Jinx are on the American airbase in Korea or wherever it is.

The YOLT subtitles are on my older VHS copy, but not on my DVD copy. Maybe the remastered 2005 DVDs will correct this?

I've never seen these subtitles either. I always thought the fact you didn't know what the woman mumbles into her purse was supposed to add to the mystery. Is she a Secret Service agent of Tiger's or does she work for SPECTRE?

I was under the impression that she is an agent of Tanaka's. Maybe?

She works for Tanaka. What she's saying is "The target has just walked by. Repeat. The target has just walked by."

Ah, that makes sense.

What version is that on? I'm pretty sure it's not on my You Only Live Twice DVD or MGM VHS.

I'll have to check my CBS/FOX VHS copy....

Ah yes, I know that copy, Harmsway, I'm looking for a copy to buy. I have a couple of the 'Connery Classics' versions, but not that specific one.

Thanks! :)

The version I have is from the 1995 MGM/UA VHS releases (with a cover very similar to the current DVD box).
