...Orloff visits Kamal's Monsoon Palace and proceeds to break the real faberge egg. Saying something to the effect of "This forgery has caused enough trouble."

Why on earth would the General destroy the very egg of which he so despertaley needed Kamal to recover?

Did you not answer your own question? ('Cause he THINKS it's a fake that has caused undue trouble). Why the confusion?

I mean, just why wouldn't Kamal speak up and say "No! You fool! That's the real egg! Do not smash it!"

*Sigh* Here you are:

For fear of coming across as being incompetent to a business partner who happens to be a powerful psychopath.

(One must NEVER reveal one's incompetence to a superior business partner. Never.)

Shall Sensualist do some more explaining, 'Bad_Facelift?

What happened to the fake egg Kamal bought at the auction?

Kamal kept it in order to sell at a later date knowing it would fetch "some" price.

In the end, Octopussy got her tentacles on it and sold it for a not unreasonable sum (for a fake) to an unscrupulous collector who pawned it off to the inexperienced curator of the Malcom S. Forbes' Peter Carl Faberge' Imperial Egg Collection to help fund Roger MooreBond's facelift operations during AVTAK pre-production, circa winter 1983-84.

I think you hit it on the head!! Thats is exactly what i thought waaay back in 1983 when I first saw it and still do today.

I think in the big picture Khan knew all the other money he was going to make.. and why be a cheap azz and say something to a crazy-pyscho-killer because he might flip and shoot him in the head over nothing.

Khan saw the big picture.. thats why he said *sighed* and sorta said "no"

but knew not to finish that thought he was thinking of "NO you stupid fool that was the real one! DO you know how hard it was to get that back.. the bidding I had to do! the crap I had to deal with 007.. then I see him with Octopussy and they both make a joke about me to my face!" :)

Mind you, it was a tad nonchalant of Khan to be tossing the real, highly prized, very expensive egg from one hand to the other when arriving at his palace.

It was symbolic:

Kamal had unreconciled (fueled by Gobinda's stern desire not to, um, 'experiment') homo-erotic tendencies and could not decide between the good General and our dear James. (O, Solitaire, can you help out here! :) )

Louis Jourdan was having a gay old time with the character.

OK.

Orlov and Khan take the real jewels from the Kremlin, and replace them with fakes.

009 steals the fake egg (leaving no egg at the Kremlin).

Orlov is alerted to an inventory at the Kremlin in two days.

Two days is not enough time to make another fake, so Khan goes to London to recover the real egg, which is to be put back in the Kremlin to pass the inventory.

So when Orlov and Khan end up getting both eggs, IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT EITHER EGG SHOULD BE SMASHED. The fake would have been sent to the Kremlin and the real one would go into their booty stash. The whole reason they even made the fakes was to put them in the Kremlin so they could make off with the originals (to sell to finance their schemes, to put in their living rooms, whatever)

The only reason I can figure the filmmakers had an egg smashed, was to reveal the transmitter to Khan, so that he would go looking for 007 at the precise moment he was lurking in the bowels of the palace, and.....cue Tiger Hunt.....

Exactly...it was a plot device, NOT a blooper!
