Okay, as many of you know I am planning on making a move and right now the plan is to transplant myself to the Los Angeles area sometime within the next three to six months.

But, if you were in my situation -- without any family ties, any loyalty to one geographic area or any set network of friends -- where would you move to here in the good old US of A (or Canada).

Hmm...

I haven't the faintest clue.

you ought to come down south snowie, south carolina is a nice place to live, a great state to hang your hat on, and columbia is the capital place to be

I've been to South Carolina 'finesse.....I lived in Columbia, S.C. for three months back in 1996.

I like many parts of America, but the only places that I would want to live are New York City or San Francisco. This may sound weird, but after living in California I couldn't wait to get back to the East coast. The big problem I had was watching a football game at ten in the morning and Monday Night Football coming on at six.

The point is that you never really know what you will like or dislike about a place until you actually live there. My advice would be to go for a few months just to make sure that you like it. LA was cool, but I got sick of everybody telling me that they were in the movie business. Everybody you run into will have a story about how they have a screenplay or a movie treatment.

Manhattan is just about the perfect place to live, but you need big bucks. The city has a great feel and is so close to a number of different attractions from the mansions of Newport to the casinos of Atlantic City.

This is astounding news as the Washington Post is the biggest newspaper in the D.C. area. It's an exciting opportunity that makes it a little tougher to decide what to do!

It's one of the biggest newspapers there is, period! Huge news.

What part of the paper would you be an editor for? Or should you not talk about it yet?

I would be in charge of coverage for the Bowie and Upper Marlboro Metro areas. Those are two of the major suburbs in the area.

I didn't realize the Washington Post was that well known. People always talk about the New York Times and LA Times when they refer to major papers.

Strangly enough, I have no opinion about the LA Times...except that I get too many damn calls pestering me to start a subscription. Sort of gives me a bad feeling towards them.

Yeah I have ALL THE PRESIDENTS MEN on DVD. I think it is one of the most accurate portrayals of what it is like as a reporter that has ever been committed to film.

I say... that in the case of getting that job... you should defiantly take the job. But maybe there's something you can do there to change your atmosphere a little. I don't know if you live in an apt, but if you do perhaps get a different apt.

Sometimes life tells you where to go. Last year I was going to Florida or bust in 2 weeks if i didn't get a job here in Cali. But poof, 2 days later I got a job, so i stayed.

Yeah.....the wierd thing is that I interviewed with the Washington Post because Tara was pushing me to do it and that was four months ago. I never heard anything back from them so I figured they had selected another candidate.

The phone call this morning therefore came out of the blue.

As for where I'd like to live, I love this area and would probably move into Seattle, it is such a diverse city, I can't imagine living anywhere else.

This is tricky. I have my family in NY, and friends that are like family to me in LA and London, England. Living in NYC puts me equidistant (pretty much) to both groups.

But if I would move, and within in the US, it would be in the LA County / Ventura County area.

Home is where the heart is....or at least your boxed set of DVD's

Take the job Dlibra. The Post? Editor? Sounds like a no brainer to me, but it's your life, your choice.

If not a move, have you considered travel? Take a few weeks, go someplace you've always wanted to, clear your head, have your own Bond adventure - Both Gardner and Benson would travel places and ask themselves "What would/could Bond do here or what could happen?" when they were working up stories.

I hear the popular destinations for the DC crowd are SC, the Carribean and Bermuda.

Go have an adventure and enjoy yourself.

Consider me available for any LA info.

As to other destinations people have listed above, I was born and raised in Seattle and it's a beautiful city. For myself, I chose California because it was where the industry was. Back in '85 when I was applying to colleges, So. Cal. was the place to be for film and TV so "I loaded up the Volvo and headed to OC...Orange County that is..."

I officially surrendered my Washington State license in August of '87 and I think I'm here to stay. 16 1/2 years later, if I didn't like it I certainly would have moved on...and I certainly wouldn't have bought a home....and I certainly wouldn't be enjoying 70 degree weather, clear skies and the three college girls sunbathing in bikini's on my roof in the middle of January right now.

A few drawbacks though - It's expensive (presuming you'd like to live away from the crack dealers) and you NEED a car. In another 50 years when the metro system is finally finished (probably just in time to be detroyed by an earthquake - but don't knock the quakes - they cause the mudslides that put out the forrest fires and distract everyone from the riots) I'm sure getting around on public transportation will be a breeze....

Take some leave for yorself DLibra. Maybe do some research on potential places.

For some reason I think Seattle looks like a cool city to live in. We've talked about going there. I'd miss the hot weather here though......

I always thought Seattle looks nice, but doesn't it rain a lot there!?
