My wife and I looked after our neighbour's cat a few months ago and one day after feeding this feline, I walked over to the bookshelf and was stunned to find about ten Fleming hardcovers nestled among the Grishams and Patricia Cornwells. I had a quick flick through them and with the exception of a couple, most of them were first editions. Oh My God!, I thought. However, they were all missing their dust jackets. This began to bug me.
Time passed and it wasn't until a few days ago when my wife was speaking with our neighbour and the subject turned to books. I happened to be nearby when I heard my wife say something about the Bond books and how it was strange that none of them had the dust jackets on them.
Well done, Moneypenny, I thought to myself.
My neighbour then told of how she "THREW THEM AWAY" because she thought "THEY WERE UGLY".
WHAT!!!???, I thought to myself.
After the paramedics left, I told her how sought-after these books were with the original dust jackets on them.
She just repeated how she thought the covers weren't much to look at and anyway, the books belonged to her ex-husband.

Just thought I'd share that with you all. After all, why should I be the only miserable one here.
Funny story, though...to some. Ah, well.

I have a similar story. My sister was babysitting for some kids one day. Later, the childrens mother came home from a Christmas party with truffles. The mother tells my sister that at the party, everyone was supposed to get a "silly" gift for someone else and that she received a James Bond remote control car! The mother says she didn't want it, so she traded for truffles which she also doesn't like. My sister then told her how big of a Bond fan I am. My theory is that if the mother brought the car home she probably would have given it to my sister to give to me! :)

Ah yes...the ballad of the Ex-husband.

I have no idea if this is a true story or not, but I heard of a woman selling a Porche for one dollar. That's right, one dollar. In the divorce agreement, she got the sell the car, and her ex-husband would get half.

Rare first editions....Porches....they are all the same.

First edition Casino Royale in dust jacket = $20,000.00 to $40,000.00

First edition Casino Royale without dust jacket = $2000 to $4000.

Not funny.

A man I know in England just threw away his James Bond collection when he moved to a new flat. His collection included signed first editions among many other things..

I am not enjoying this thread. It is macabre and it is making me gasp - I am going to close my eyes and go to a thread that does not involve stories of people putting their first edition Casino Royales through the mulcher.

I think one or two of them might have been, but the rest of them were the real McCoy.
