As for my favorite comics...
Daily Show/Alumni:
Stephen Colbert
Steve Carell
John Oliver
Jonathan Hodgman
Beth Littleford
Lewis Black
A couple years ago I would have included Jon Stewart, but I don't think he's really that funny on "The Daily Show" any more.
Onwards:
Dave Barry
Bill Cosby
Demetri Martin
Tim Allen
For the record I would like to say that Dane Cook is not the least bit funny.

I totally agree. He hasn't made any impact this side of the atlantic, but I'm aware of the effect he has had on the other side. He seems to take observational comedy to its most basic limits, e.g. "film trailers turn us into film critics!!!". Still, he must sell out theatres for some reason.

He was funny has hell but spoke so much truth, I'd love to see his view on the state of the world today, I could just imagone his reaction to seeing another Bush in power. ( Although Republicans will probably despise him)
Eddie Izzard my wife and I have his box set, very funny his James Mason impression is hliarious.
Dave Allen, I remember Allen when I was a kid and appreciated him right up until his death. The only comedian that my Dad likes and I still like after I grew up, to think I found Jim Davidson funny when I was too young to know better.
Frankie Boyle, newish Scottish comedian, going to see him in October live, he's on Mock the Week and was on Have I Got News for you a couple of weeks back. Very dry and no subject seems too risky for him, can't wait till October.
Robin Williams, his 80's standup VHS's were very funny when I was younger, I haven't seen tham for a long time but I remember them being very intelligent but laugh out hilarious
Dennis Leary, No Cure for Cancer was very funny although I have a bitter aftertaste about him due to his plagerising Hick's material. Hick's was the real deal and was an incendiary stand up, Leary was good but was looking to his film career and T.V roles, Dennis's material is too near to Hick's for anyone to think it's just a coincidence, the argument goes on but I rule in Hick's favour and he himself was most offended at Leary's theft.
I don't mind Peter Kaye but he's overrrated, he can be funny but seeing Dave Spikey & Patrick Mcguinness all have the same act it gets tiring. Apparently Spikey is believed to have wrote the majority of the superb Phoenix Nights despite Kaye getting all the acclaim and it's now the reason that a 3rd season is not going into production, Spikey can't stand Kaye and won't work with him again. Mcguinnes is a joke full stop, Gregg's anyone. "OOhhh that fresh baked taste"
Pryor of course, the master and far superior to Eddie Murphy, to think I found his stand up funny, I now watch it embarassed. The homophobia and that hate of women is so evident even on Delirious, very energetic and very funny at times but too much plain hate dressed up as comedy, quite ironic considering his recentish incident with a transexual.
Not seen alot of Woody Allen standup but his ability to write comedy is undeniable and would count as one of the funniest people alive in his prime although he'd probably disagree himself.

Good post, thanks for sharing. I agree with a lot of your points and you've also given me some new names to check out. Cheers,

I will smile on the day of their demise.
I don't watch too much stand-up, what they have on comedy central is very rarely funny.
However, some of the ones that other have mentioned I like. Jerry Seinfeld is my favorite (although by no means am I a stund-up aficionado).
As an aside, how many of the original posters in this thread are still around?
I could very easily live the rest of my life without hearing another routine about how men/women or different races are different. We've heard it before!

I can't express how relieved I am that no one has said they liked Dane Cook, or, God forbid, that awful Carlos Mencia.
I will smile on the day of their demise.
Most of Mencia's skits/stand-up are just mean now. There's a fine line between being sarcastic and being a huge jerk, and he crossed that line years ago.

Agree totally. Mencia has sucked for awhile now.

And naturally, George Carlin, and the late, great Buddy Hackett.
