Value of money in Fleming's time?

I've started reading Casino Royale again, and I find that the first chapter is full of financial figures that I'm having trouble working with.

Bond has 23 million Francs in total currency to gamle with, is that a lot? My main point of comparison is the

I suppose it would depend on the exchange rate at the time. I believe the French/UK rate is about 10-1.

Yes I know it is hard to understand those amount of money in the "old ages".
But in 1953 the "francs" were "ancient francs".
In 1963, the french governement created the new francs. 100 ancient francs worth one new franc.
So the amounts of money in Casino Royale are a lot, but they were ancient francs. You have to take off two 00 to know how much new francs they represented.
At those moments 8 new francs worth around 1 english pound
And 10 new francs were a bit more than 2 american dolars.
Thinks have changed since
I hope it is clearer for you now.
