Height - 6'2"
Age by 2007 - 38

"Gerard Butler's debut movie role was as Billy Connolly's younger brother in the movie Mrs. Brown (1997). His movie career continued with small roles in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and Russell Mulchary's Tale of the Mummy (1998). In 2000 Butler was cast in his breakthrough roles - playing Attila the Hun in the USA movie "Attila" (2001) and Dracula in Wes Craven's "Dracula 2000/2001"."

With his dark hair and blue eyes, Butler fits the classic Bond depiction. But he's reportedly been touted and shot-down for the role before. Does he have what it takes to be 007?

Who did Gerard Butler play in Tomorrow Never Dies? Was he the seamen aboard HMS Devonshire with the Scots brogue who informed the captain "We're down 30 degree by the stern"?

To read more about Gerard Butler, go to part two of my 'next Bond' series, (click here); Gerard Butler as next Bond

I think he has potential, but has yet to convince me that he has presence enough to carry a franchise like Bond.

if he would be 38 by 2007 that would be the first time a bond actor has been younger than me in my life time, i dont know if i like that or not

I certainly think he looks the part of James Bond but the only thing i have really seen him in is the Dracula movie.

Bless the person who posted that glorious to-die-for photo of Gerry! Whew! If you'll excuse me, I need to get something to fan myself.... :) Be back in a minute...

Ok, now that I've calmed myself down... *still waving fan over my face*

I think that with some work, Gerry could pull it off. C'mon, EON, bring him back in for more tests!!

happy b-day GB. but back to the subject....he is way to scruffy looking to play bond and he is too big muscular to play bond.

He would need some voice coaching, as his accent is a bit too strong. He's hard to understand sometimes

Whoa! Hadn't noticed this one before. I don't think he'd make a great Bond at all, not liking his appearance too much, he's just not suitable in my book for the role of 007.

I still, sadly, haven't seen one who I completely like. :)

Ha Ha. I guess so, well, it's all cool with me, otherwise, I wouldn't have seen to much about this guy!

Always interesting to see possible contenders for the next role of 007!

Gerald Butler and Clive Owen have been and still remain my favorites to succeed Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. Johnboy007 mentioned that Gerald Butler might require voice coaching. I can tell you, as an owner of Butler's 'Attila' on DVD, that the man is most amenable to changes in accent!! He naturally has a very thick Scottish accent, but as 'Attila' one simply cannot detect a trace of that accent at all. I was first moved towards the notion that Gerald Butler can play Bond after seeing the man clean shaven, during certain scenes in 'Attila'. He has a 'Dalton like' quality about his features, which I feel would suit Bond perfectly. Here are the scenes in question:

Who is this brilliant Methos and how can we clone him into a million little more Bond fans??? He has the fine taste to be a Dalton fan plus he loves the idea of both Clive Owen and Gerard Butler as Bond contenders. And they just happen to be my two choices as well! I've given up on Owen (*sniff*) but it would be wonderful to see Butler considered...

Way to go, Sir Methos! :)

Thank you Jaelle!!! :) I just wrote a lengthy post about the literary Bond's physical appearance, as written by Fleming. The funny thing is that Gerard Butler had not come to mind, when comparing the measure of Hoagy Carmichael and a Fleming authorized portrait sketch of the literary Bond. I contended that Clive Owen comes closest to the Fleming authorized sketch, but Butler kinda fits too. :)

Posted Image

Jaelle, why give up on Owen??? Sure, he's seemingly not interested in the role...but does'nt that sound vaguely familiar?? :) Anything's possible I say and if the money and the job security are right, I can't see any actor flatly turning down the role if offered. :)

Butler is rubbish- no presence at all. In Tomb Raider 2 he was just a void in a character who should have stolen the film. No charisma at all.

I've given up on Owen (*sniff*)

Why? I'm sure that The Powers That Be would be far more likely to choose him over Butler. Owen is more famous, commands far more respect as an actor, and has a much higher profile in the Bond fan community. With the upcoming KING ARTHUR, he may be on the verge of becoming a Hollywood leading man. His only serious rival right now is Hugh Jackman (who is probably the leading contender). By comparison to Owen, Butler is almost an unknown, a George Lazenby figure, and I'm certain that MGM/Eon will insist on casting someone with at least a reasonable level of fame and success.

As for Butler's abilities, as opposed to his status in the industry, I'm afraid, Jaelle, that I agree with marktmurphy: "Butler is rubbish- no presence at all. In Tomb Raider 2 he was just a void in a character who should have stolen the film. No charisma at all."

I've given up on Owen because I just don't believe that EON would ever hire him, barring some incredible success in one of his upcoming films. I believe they view him as riskier than pretty boy Jackman. Jackman's a crowd pleaser and that's who'll they'll go for. I would dearly love to see Owen as Bond of course. I just don't think it will ever happen. Not that I think Butler's chances are any greater but he is at least younger than Owen. I haven't seen the TOMB RAIDER film. I just know that I've very much enjoyed him in what I *have* seen him in.

He wouldn't be the first Scot whose accent was a bit thick. (cough) Connery (cough). Ever see Dr No or From Russia With Love?

Anyway I saw the second Lara Croft movie not knowing who Butler was/ I had only heard his name bandied about the board here. In the first scene where he's doing the upside pushups on the ceiling of the cell in the Kazahkstani Prison, then flips down to land on his feet and turn around. I said to myself. "My god. it's James Bond." Loved him from that minute on. If Pierce truly has left the role, Go Gerry!

I've just done a search for Gerard Butler & up popped this old thread...so I thought I might aswell post here as opposed to creating another.

Anyway, I knew nothing about Mr Butler until I caught '300' on Blu-Ray a couple of nights back and wow - I think he would make a great successor to Daniel once he decides to hang up the Tux. Butler has great presence and charisma, isn't hard on the eyes and he can act a bit, which helps. He voice is also quite connery-esque ("Thish ish Shpartaaa"). :cooltongue:

He might be pretty good. The accent may need to be toned down a little. However, he is right up there with Daniel Craig in the ripped category.

I think he could have been (and still would be) a good pick. Of the "commercial" choices, I still think he was definitely preferable to Clive Owen and Hugh Jackman.
