Absolutely no question about it whatsoever: "You Only Live Twice".
I've tried to explain why I rate it so highly in this thread: http://forums.comman...&threadid=11642.

To answer your question to the point, Dr. No.
Although, OHMSS is right behind it.

The best one I've read is OHMSS. I haven't been able to track down a copy of YOLT but I've just started the DAD novelisation which so far is superb. Far superior to the film and it works better as a book I feel.

I vote for From Russia With Love. When you become engrossed in a James Bond book and Bond doesn't even appear in the first third or so of it it tells me it must be something special.
I have yet to read YOLT, but the recent enthusiasm for it on the forum is making me want to begin it sometime soon.

ps, the DAD novelization was not written by Ian Fleming. Live and Let Die is second best book-more dated though.

I know it's not written by Fleming! It's written by Raymond Benson, I doubt you've heard of him. I was just stating that as I haven't been able to get YOLT I decided to read DAD.
