Man, Lucas is REALLY gonna pay.
The man has certainly lost his passion for filmmaking. Gone is the eager, young filmmaker who set out to make an enjoyable movie. He's gone from Stephen Sommers to Bill Gates at a disgusting rate.

Oh, you mean like Luke's girly scream at the end of Empire as he falls down the pipe? The editing gets chopped up as they tried to throw in Vader's shuttle heading for the Avenger, and kinda threw the rhythm and pacing that the original sequence had. Believe it or not, that's the ONLY addition that really rubbed me the wrong way.
Bing; you, Triton and Zencat have zeroed in on something and it's been echoed by fan and critic alike: those "additions" to TESB are needless and offer nothing to the story. When the SE trilogy was released theatrically, Siskel and Ebert remarked that TESB was their favorite of the trilogy and the fact that not much was done to it speaks volumes about the movie itself.
What really burns me is that there was plenty of footage that was never re-inserted into TESB that could've worked. Apparently while Luke escapes from the snow creature's lair, back inside the rebel base, troops have encountered the creatures and contained them in a section of the compound behind a door....
...Later, as the base is overrun and Han, Leia and Threepio are making their way to the Falcon, Threepio lures the stormtroopers(snowtroopers) into that door and certain doom! Diehard SW fans have said that the scene with the snow creatures in the base was part of the original trailer from '79 and at the time, people were puzzled that it was missing from the final cut.
As for Luke's leap: IT WAS A CONSCIOUS DECISION by Luke to "fall." So why the scream(especially if it's the emperor's scream from ROTJ)?! Vader asking for his shuttle(via new dialogue) is eye candy. What's worse is that they could've shown the shuttle landing as he made his way across the pad.
The other additions to the movie were justified. The problems with the compositing during the snow battle were corrected and the changes to Cloud City's architecture gave the location more scope.
The only thing extra, I would expect from the DVD release of the "original trilogy" are the screen tests, rehearsals and original scenes that still haven't made the Special Editions. Namely, Luke's original appearance w/Biggs shortly after Princess Leia's ship is boarded in ANH. If they tweak these flicks again, to give creedence to the prequels, I'll convert my existing vhs tapes to DVD.

Sorry WarBird but you'll never get those classic Star Wars movies on DVD!

Anyway, I have a question which I'd be grateful if any STAR WARS buffs here were able to answer: is Senator Palaptine supposed to be the same person as Darth Sidious? Yes, I know it may seem a silly question, but I've heard that he is from some quarters, while others tell me that Lucas simply wanted to use the same actor for both roles and didn't intend the characters to be seen as the same.

They are the same individual(listen to the audio commentary), however there is speculation that Palpatine may actually be a clone.
Head on over to TheForce.Net for insight.

That's why I'm happy to own the complete runs of Gerry Anderson's STINGRAY and CAPTAIN SCARLETT & THE MYSTERONS on DVD.
Captain Scarlett had great stories and exceptional modelmaking. Plus the puppets heads were normal size, unlike STINGRAY & THE THUNDERBIRDS.

Used to watch those shows on ITV growing up in the UK.
Models were tangible objects and something about them made them look more real than the CGI graphics we have today!

Obi Wan: "You are the learner, and I am the master."
Anakin: "One day I'll say that right back to you!"
Obi Wan: "Your powers are weak, young man."
Anakin: "You can strike me down, but I shall grow.. bigger and more mechanical than you!"
