And yes, Amis did quite remarkably move to the right of the political spectrum in a relatively short space of time, but that does not mean that Mrs Fleming was necessarily convinced by it. Plus, as spynovelfan points out, Bond's working with Soviet Ariadne as well as the offer of the Order of Lenin does suggest that her fears of a left wing 'influence' pervading COLONEL SUN may have been justified to an extent. At least it could be argued that way.

NO DEALS, MR BOND. It all ticks on quite well for a few pages, and then the grammar or the exposition is just so poor that you have to stop for a minute and calm down.

That may be rather hard to pull off considering he died about 10-11 years ago. If we're gonna have dead people write the James Bond novels we might as well get Ian Fleming, although I've often wondered what a Bond novel by W. Somerset Maugham would be like. :tup: :D :D

Amis was a pretty good writer, I think - except on the last page of CS, where the dialogue completely falls apart. "It makes me feel sad"?!

...yeah.

That kinda ruined it for me. And makes me a bit glad that he didn't try another.

I have to agree - i got spiked in a club there and woke up to find a new a acquaintance trying to take my watch off! I woke up that morning in a hedge running down the centre of the high street - still had my watch :)

I am so glad that you provided that link. When I was a kid, I heard on my local TV station that there was to be Bond story in which Bond was to be killed by a bazooka-wielding bartender. However, when I became a Bond fan in the early 70s, I never saw that story and despite looking for now and then, I never saw a reference to it until I followed your link. It really is great to finally, after 43 years, to find out what had happened! Thanks.
