Could AVTAK would've worked with another actor as Bond?

It comes to this question: Could someone else (like Dalton or otherwise) have done AVTAK instead of Moore?

One of AVTAKs major hinderances is the age of Moore and whilst it was always apparant in the few films leading up to AVTAK, here it is beyond limits. It makes Bond look like a doddering old grandad and as such makes the action scenes of the film a little disbelievable. I reckon that if Dalton was on board at this point, they could have written the script to his strengths, added more action and overall we would have a better film. Don't get me wrong, I still love AVTAK (in my Top Ten) but it's just lacking in so many areas and the physicallity of Moore is one of them. Also the less said about is face-lift the better.

The Bond series began its steady slide when that Welshman Dalton came on board and (with the glimmer of hope that was GE proving the exception) continued that slide with the PB series.

The end is clearly more dalton-ish..
BUT I think this movie could have been Pierce's first.. I can see that.
** I personally would have loved to see Roger go out with Octopussy!! IF he did he would have had NO bad movies.. AVTAK has grown on me. but all the others are 3 1/2 or 4 star movies!
I kinda slightly.. very slightly have the feeling with Roger in avtak .. that it was like a Boxer who stayed around for one to many fights.. he should have retired on top and have a perfect career..
very slight.

I always thought of AVTAK in these terms: imagine holding a going-away party for the most popular guy in the office. Presents are given, fond farewells are made and a good time is had all around.
The next day, the guy walks into the office like nothing happened, acting like he's there for business as usual. Everyone feels a little awkward. Octopussy was the party - AVTAK was that awkward day after.

Wonderful observation. OP was a great movie, and Roger could have ended it. BUt Cubby didn't want to let him go, and I think that because NSNA came out in 1983, Roger would want to make another Bond film, just to show Connery right?
I am glad he did it, the way he moves around during the party at Zorin's monster home is memorable. ANd ROger deserves to star in the Bond film which features the best song title ever.
No, I can't think of another person starring in AVTAK, I like the story, and it is still relevant today.
IMagine if they had Sean Connery in AVTAK?

I'd prefer not to, thank you goldengun....I think AVTAK is Moore's second best James Bond movie (after TSWLM)...

That special you are referring to was shown in 1987, timed to appear with the release of "The Living Daylights"....I also seem to remember that Roger had already announced his retirement from the role before AVTAK came out.
But on the subject of that TV special on 25 Years of 007, I taped that back in Scotland and was really cool to see Roger Moore play the suave James Bond one more time...
