Steven Hartley (38) was born in Shipley West Yorkshire and grew up in York where he attended Grammar school. He was a keen amateur boxer and gained notable success for York and Yorkshire in the late 1970s and early '80s. He attended the LAMDA drama school in London in 1981 and has worked extensively in Reparatory Theatre all over the country and starred in numerous West End plays. Most recently he starred as 'Bill Sykes' in Sam Mendes award winning production of Oliver at The London Palladium opposite Robert Lindsay's Fagin.

Steven's first major TV role was as Matthew Jackson in EastEnders between 1987-1989 and since then Steven has been familiar face on TV. His varied roles include Gary Meadows in 'Trial & Retribution IV', drug dealer Paul O'Dowd in 'Sharman', wrestler Alan Enstone in 'Rumble', 'Bad Boys',' Young Indiana Jones', and 'Pie in The Sky' to name a few.

His films include 'Columbus the Discovery' with Marlon Brando, Tom Selleck and Catherine Zeta Jones. 'Final Warning' with John Voight, 'Toscanni', 'Split Second' and his most recent film was 'Dog Of Flanders'. He was also considered for the part of James Bond at the age of 28. He was also cast as the original 'Sharpe' but the series was shelved for two years when the producer sadly died.

He should be 007.

I dunno, he sort of looks the part, but I can't imagine him as Bond. I think his voice is too deep. I didn't see much of him in The Bill, but I've seen him here and there over the last few years - I can't comment on his acting ability.

I didn't know he had been considered for Bond before. Where did you read/hear this?

At least he's the right age and at the right level of fame.

Welcome to the boards, Hartley_bond. Makes you wonder if you're Mr Hartley himself, or his agent. I don't like his voice, it's too husky and sounds like he needs a good dose of Benilyn to sort it out.

I saw him in the Bill, and he was alright, I suppose, not someone I'd considered for the part, and I'm sure there's someone more fitting for the role.

Hope to see you about more, great to have you on board :)

I used to work at the Bill. There was a general feeling of apathy towards Hartley- most people I knew didn't think much of him.

Just admin stuff, nothing really involved directly with the production.
Really nice to place to work though, very friendly. I still pop back now and then.

I'd love a job in TV/films - any job, I'll make the tea!! I know its not as glamourous as its made out to be, but I just find all the behind the scenes stuff fascinating, especially as an extremely amateur writer.

Anyway, sorry to have hijacked your topic hartley_bond - Welcome to the forums!

Welcome to the forums hartley_bond.
I don't think Steven Hartley would be a good choice for 007, but perhaps as a fellow 00 agent...?

I've can't say I can remember seeing this guy act in anything, but I guess he does look a little like Connery in the bottom two pics.

Which could actually be a disadvantage for him in a way.

I think he looks more like Brosnan than any other Bond. I can't see him playing Bond myself though and I agree that he would probably be better off playing a fellow '00'.

008 perhaps?
