Hope this hasn't been done before but the quote in GE when Alec tells Bond: "... or if you've found forgiveness in the arms of all those willing women, for the dead ones you failed to protect?" That is a direct mention of Tracy (Bond's Wife) correct? Or am I for some reason missing the mark?

I wouldn't say direct.
There are many other Bond girls that could be referring to: Aki, Corinne Clery, Tilly Masterson, to name a few.

Alec was basically trying to make Bond look bad in front of Natalya in my opinion. And trying to make Natalya a little uneasy maybe. Thats all I got.

I dont think Alec was trying to make Bond look bad in front of Natalya or make her uneasy, I dont think she was anything to him other then a way to get at Bond. I think he was just trying to hurt Bond by reminding of the women who had died as it is probably a sore point for Bond.
I also agree with dark, I dont think it was a direct reference to Tracy, but all the women who had died such as the ones dark mentioned, as well as Andrea Anders, Plenty O'Tool, Felix's wife Della etc.

I took that as being a direct reference to all the so-called "sacrificial lambs" that got "dispatched" throughout the series.

I always considered it to be a personal stab at Bond. He's a complex chartacter that tries to put up a simple exterior and tries to lead a somewhat simple life (which is displayed heavily in the Fleming books). Alec was attempting to break that exterior and gain some access into Bond's inner psyche.

i think i read somewhere on these forums that the original script had "find forgiveness..... for the dead ONE you failed to protect". If thats true then its definetly a direct reference to Tracy. It was probably changed due to the fact Michael G Wilson questioning at the time whether Brosnan's Bond had been married to Tracy

You're right about one fact, brendan, It originally (In Feirstein's script, I believe) read "the dead one you failed to protect," but I'm not sure it was for the reason you provided that it was changed, maybe it was felt that it wasn't just Tracy that died due to her involvement with Bond.
Can anyone shed light on the reason as to why it was changed? It might mention it in the GoldenEye commentary.

That's an interesting insight. Would've made for a damn good line too. Any proof this is true?

It's tit-for-tat. And an excellent comeback after someone belittles your masterplan "all because poor little Alec has a score to settle with the world."
Bond's reactions to 006's comeback are priceless. Ultimately, those words hit home without really hitting below the belt.

I love this line. Probably one of, if not, my favorite line(s) in the series. Some people don't like the idea of probing Bond's weaknesses and/or showing a deeper side to Bond but I love it.
