Oh well, how about John Cleese? Yeah, I know, there's no comparing him to Desmond... but when you compare him to most everything else in DAD, he has to be a good thing.

John Cleese has something that makes you laugh. That's not a good thing for a Bond movie.

Now, DAD is a great action movie with exciting action scenes, but it's NOT the best Bond movie ever. There are others with exhilarating moments, interesting pot and atmosphere that places you in the screen.

One thing I like about DAD is the cinematography. Bondfilms always looks great and DAD is perhaps one of the better examples. From Cuba to Iceland, the film is full with amazing visual scenes (I particularly loved the London-scenes). Even though Wagner did the best he could to ruin it with his editing, I still think you have to give the D.P. some credit. In fact, I wouldn't mind if Tattersall became part of the regular crew on these films.

Actually, the cinematography in DAD was one of the things I disliked. All the locations looked dull and lacking in the vitality and flair that seemed to inhabit the other locations in previous Bond movies (save perhaps for TWINE). Iceland looked like a polystyrene set while Cuba looked like most other mock-up Cuban backdrops in some tv series. Everything seemed quite dismal here, and let's not forget North Korea which was actually somewhere in muddy old England.

If you haven't checked out book trailers, or if you want to see some really cools ones I've found a few places that are really good. My favorite is on YouTube at www.youtube.com/booktrailers, but I also like the new ones on the BN.com site at www.bn.com and go to the BN Studio, and I love the Borders Media site too. VidLits are pretty cool www.vidlits.com. http://www.youtube.com/booktrailers

Sure, but there was absolutely no way that they could have filmed it on location. I visited those Korean locations a few months before DAD opened and when I saw the film I thought that they did an incredible job in recreating them. One of the most convincing pieces of production design I've ever seen, in fact.

Leonard Maltin rates it *** in his movie book - the same rating that he gives Casino Royale.

Leonard Maltin is an idiot; he gave Gremlins a bad grade -- then paid for it in the sequel!

Is that why he gives Gremlins 2 a higher mark?

This thread is why I will never post a review about a recently released movie. I'm usually not one to revise my opinion radically, especially downward... but I'd rather stay on the safe side just the same.

I've got a craving to watch Die Another Day again. Maybe I'll pop in my UE sometime this week? Hopefully this time I won't fall asleep when Bond reaches Iceland (because that's when the film goes downhill). I can believe an invisible car, however, I can't buy that stupid glacier surfing scene. I really hate Tama-whore-i...

I love this thread. I am not a fan of Die Another Day but even I get swepped away not only by zencat's brilliant opening post, but some of the comments backing up those opinions later.

It was an exciting time to be a Bond fan for those who can remember it, despite the quality of the movie itself.

It sure was! Die Another Day was the first Bond film I ever saw in the theater.

You know all's well with the world when you see this thread again. A reassuring old pal. Whilst the film should have its face hacked off with a shovel and be dumped in an unmarked grave, the thread is rather lovely.

My first was The Living Daylights, but I would say Die Another Day was the first I saw as a big Bond fan, as since 1999 I had become a move avid fan of the movies.

It wasn't for me. I was embarrassed going with my friends to see it.

Still this thread is a good time capsule and attests that first impressions are not always that reliable. And it's good entertainment.

I cringed in the cinema. In fact I cringed several times - at the invisible car, at the awful surfing and parachuting. Then I just fell into depression when the whole thing on the plane started. I was never 'happy' with this film, if anything I tried to convince myself that the first half made it at least half decent. But, everytime I give it another chance I'm faced with the same, sad fact again: the film just doesn't do anything for me on any level.

Call me crazy, but in real life I think I would prefer someone who considered DAD the best Bond movie to someone who compared the film to mustard gas or cancer or considered it an intelligence test.

I dig your enthusiasm, BC! Just as I dig zencat's circa 2002.

Why? Because they mirrored my own excitement at seeing Die Another Day. It was - and remains, in light of the Craig era reboot - a milestone film; the culmination of 40 years and 20 films. It mightn't top the Centenary celebrations, but back in 2002, the 40th anniversary was a landmark for the series - and Die Another Day was a great celebration of this achievement.

Despite its shortcomings there are parts of DAD I like a lot! From the shipboard hospital up until the ice palace I like quite a lot. I also like the car chase on the ice. What I dislike the most is the PTS (I liked it up until the hovercraft), the ice sled, CGI surfing and the ending. The rest is great fun however.

It was the first I saw as an adult, and the first I had seen in probably five years or so (before that was TWINE). Looking back, I'm amazed I was willing to see another one afterward, as I wasn't fond of it and was told it was a throwback to the older days. Luckily I did give the next one suggested to me a chance, since I was promised it was the polar opposite. It ended up being The Living Daylights, which sold me as a Bond fan. So, in a weird way, I might not be here if it wasn't for DAD.

I'm with you Publius.

Die Another Day helped me find CBn.

I came straight here after watching it. I registered and posted back then, and stayed for a few weeks. But by the time I came back in October 2005, I had forgotten my old username or password and so re-registered.

Is Die Another Day the best Bond film ever?

Only time will tell…

<Enter George Carlin, R.I.P, as the lovable Rufus in Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey>

“But time HAS told!”

It sure has Rufus, and the answer is quite clearly ‘No’. Die Another Day is NOT the best Bond film ever.

This thread rocks though.
