Last week I read a Sky news article about Bond going back to his past. It gave a convincing argument on why some of the movies should go back to the cold war. It had me thinking this is what EON should do. 

Considering how Spectre could be seen as a closing to the modern Bond saga, perhaps there could be something about having future movies be set in the fifties?

I know it's wishful thinking, but I say go for it. Put Bond back in HIS element. Damn the naysayers. lol.

It would be an interesting experiment, but maybe not on film. As a series (say, co-produced by HBO/BBC), doing adaptations of the books set in their era, it could work nicely. The films, I feel, because they are so few and far between, need to keeping going, and keep apace with the rest of action/spy cinema (or, preferably, keep ahead of it).

I would think it could work as a one-off, just one single 'event' production set in the past. And since the sixties are tired and clichéed by now I'd make it the seventies, plenty of stuff for conflict there. It would also be a chance to make a 'serious' Bond of an era that many think was too much played for laughs.

Post war 50s, tracking some nazi on the run in south america. From Buenos Aires to Chile. Just cast Aidan Turner, give him that Agatha Christie haircut, an old Bentley and all that. Could work. I, for one, love the idea.

It would have to be a rival company making either a series of Cold War Bond movies, or as a TV series.

 

I would welcome a TV series along these lines.

Agree. I like the period piece content, but keep it contained to the novels and comics.

If we took Bond back to the 60s, it would signal that there is a problem with Bond in the present and they were diverting off track for one reason or another.

 

Bond laid a strong foundation for 60s spy movies and TV shows that carried on into the 2000s, but Bond has always stayed one step ahead of the trend it leaves behind.

 

If it were to back and tap into it's own (now dated) foundation, it would be seen as desperate and probably compared to other material it shouldn't be.

Fleming never wrote any period pieces - he was just never interested. Neither am I. And the most dated elements in his books - the Nazis in Moonraker, the wild west stuff in Diamonds - are among the most wrong-feeling parts of the series. Bond is ever a contemporary character!

If they stop, then the media might stop too. I also don't think the dated Bond look would work - Bond is cutting-edge and should remain so. As mentioned previously if Eon changed the formula dramatically by going back in time for BOND 25 it would reek of a lack of confidence.

I think it was good and well done in CR, QOS and SF.  To revisit that theme in SPECTRE again was already pushing it needlessly.

You've got to be kidding! The synopsis for Bond 25 will be:-

 

Working as a rogue agent away from MI6, James Bond must use all his abilities to track down a threatening villain with a personal connection. While M battles to keep the "00" section alive back in London, Bond travels to Italy and Brazil to work out who the mysterious family connection is, and stop them before it's too late...

I think that following the Craig era might be a bit challenging for any new actor as Craig really nailed the role IMHO. I have often thought that one off period piece with a really good actor who normally would not be in for a series might be the way to go. It would be great to see a real faithful adaptation of one of the novels like Moonraker.

That I could live with. I´ve been advocating it for years. But done right, almost to the page. We´ve never been to a point where it would make as much sense as now. This would be the perfect opportunity for it. Maybe the last for many years to come.

After Craig's recent negative comments about the franchise, I'd feel too uncomfortable to watch him again as 007.  With the exception of QoS, I thoroughly enjoyed his tenure, so I respect him enough not to advocate for his return.  Seeing him on the screen - knowing that he's completely miserable - would be too Of Mice and Men's "Lennie and the rabbit" for my taste.   I guess, if I were old enough, I probably would have had a similar reaction to Connery's return in DAF.

 

Thanks for the great films, Daniel.  Now, let's move forward and find a worthy successor.
