Timothy Dalton has joined the cast of the Showtime horror series Penny Dreadful, which was created by Skyfall director Sam Mendes and writer John Logan.

Dalton isn't the James Bond alumni to be cast in the series.  Dalton will join the already cast Josh Hartnett and Casino Royale's Eva Green.

Nice to see Dalton getting more high profile roles again!  Looking forward to this project!

Hopefully this is a more substantial role and not another guest spot.  It would be great if Dalton could parlay this kind of role into some more work for networks like HBO and Showtime.

Agreed. Definitely going to keep an eye on this.

Great to see Dalton getting some quality work! Let's hope they give him plenty of screen-time!

Apparently this mini-series involves the characters of Frankenstein and Dracula as well. Should be interesting.

Good of Logan and Mendes to think of him.

Also saw a rumor that he may be eyed for the role of Alfred to Ben Affleck's Batman.

Just a rumor, so will be keeping my hopes in check.

That would be great if it turns out to be the case.  Even though Batman vs. Superman excites me in absolutely no way whatsoever at this point, having Dalton in such a big release could only help in terms of getting him more high-profile roles down the road.

Great news - I hope to see it over here in the UK! We need more Dalton on our screens.

And as for the 'Man Of Steel 2' casting as Batman's Alfred, well that's certainly exciting and helped give Michael Caine a new lease of life to new fans in the Nolan universe. Hope that's true! :D

I can't see Dalton as Alfred. Unless we have a new version of Alfred that slaps around Bruce Wayne and tells him to "get some back bone and quit wearing your underwear on the outside of your costume you little *****!"

I've always thought that Timothy Dalton would make a fine Dracula - and no, that has nothing to do with his hairdo in LTK!

I can't really see Dalton as Alfred opposite Affleck as Batman either, as it would be a bit odd to have Alfred as a character who is more of a badass than Batman himself.

Check out the recent portrayals of Alfred in Batman: Earth One and Beware The Batman. I can see Dalton playing that type of Alfred well.

Hell, as much as I don't approve of Affleck being the new Batman, I'd watch it if Dalton played Alfred.

This is one television show which I am seriously anticipating.  It has a collection of talent seemingly arranged to focus on the modern Bond fan, with Timothy Dalton, Rory Kinnear and Eva Green in front of the camera and with the billion dollar Bond director behind it. It should be spectacular.  My favorite new series Doctor Who companion, Billie Piper being added to the cast, makes it icing on the cake!

That's not Eva Green's voice in the teaser trailer is it?

I think it is.  Especially when she says "I believe in demons."--the same intonation as she has in the scene on the train in CR.

Dalton is great, I would love to see him in any film or show (even Beauty and the Beautician). However, I don't think the Alfred role would work that well, mainly because he isn't that old. Roger Moore would make more sense as Alfred.

There's a new teaser for Penny Dreadful out today, featuring a voice-over conversation between Dalton and another character.

Looking forward to this now even more.  I would also love Dalton to go back to the spy thriller genre and get the ability to do an older Bond-like character, in a show on a cable channel which could really delve into things.

It would be awesome if one of the premium cable channels like HBO or Showtime would do something like that.  Maybe if Penny Dreadful is successful enough, Dalton can get some more work with Showtime.

At least it seems that Dalton gets more attention from casting people - or is it that he´s enthusiastic again about acting more?

I remember when I saw that DOCTOR WHO episode with him, thinking "Is this the beginning of a Dalton revival" - and then having him do his wonderful arc on "Chuck".

It does seem as though Dalton's somewhat picky when it comes to choosing roles.  I think he was asked at some point during the filming of Chuck whether or not he'd do more TV work, which he alluded to the fact that he probably wouldn't, and that he decided to do Chuck because he really liked what he saw when the creators of the show sent him the box sets for the three preceding seasons.  So, at the very least, it does seem like Penny Dreadful will be something worth watching, as it was able to lure Dalton back to the realm of serialized TV.

We've got our first look at Dalton in Penny Dreadful.  He's in the background of this picture of Josh Hartnett and Eva Green.

Also, a link to the article that contains the photo.

You're welcome.   :)

Here's another I found.  I think this one might actually have been the first image released featuring Dalton.

I'm putting it in a spoiler tag due to the fact that it's staged in what looks like a make-shift morgue, which might be unsettling to some out there:

I'd pay to see that, but your point stands. I don't want to see Tim as somebody's servant. Given Mendes and Logan's involvement with Penny Dreadful and Bond, I wonder if this might lead to Dalton playing the villain in a future Bond film...

I have absolute faith that this will be shown on a channel that no bugger in the UK can get without subscribing to Elliott Carver's satellite empire.
Like Game of Thrones.
And Hannibal.
And Broadwalk Empire.
And Breaking Bad.
And Fleming!

The very idea that someone working for ITV or Channel 4 should reach in to their pockets and pay some money to screen something other than ice skating shows or documentaries about people with 10 stone testicles...
