I also wouldn't miss it if they just dumped it. I don't personally find it near as iconic and necessary as some of the other elements.

That said, if they put it in at all, it should be at the beginning.

Three gunbarrels. One at the beginning, one at the start of the credits, and one at the end. That should please everybody.

I was fine with the opening shot of SF, it sorta looked like a gunbarrel. However the music was lame and certainly didn't scream, "Hey, this is a James Bond movie! it's the fiftieth anniversary!" No, all we got were those two lame little notes from Thomas Newman.

I just hope we get a traditional gun barrel at the beginning of the film. I'm not a fan of the gun barrel designs used for QoS and SF. The gun barrel for Casino Royale is wonderful, in the context of the title sequence, but it wouldn't work on it's own. I hope they base the design on the classic Binder gun barrel they used for the Skyfall poster. Use that gun barrel, put Bond in a tuxedo, have him walk, turn and shoot (without a CGI bullet), have the blood drip down and the the gun barrel move around and iris out into the first shot. How hard it that?

We haven't see that kind of gun barrel since The World Is Not Enough which will be 16 years old when Bond 24 debuts. An entire generation of fans have grown up without seeing a proper gun barrel on the big screen.

Here's hoping Sam Mendes corrects this mistake.

Three gun barrels. LOL.

I've grown to love Craig's gun barrels each one different then the last.

I suspect if the gun barrel is at the start of Bond 24 its only because they plan to end the film on a different song then the Bond theme.

The Casino Royale gunbarrel and blood is my favourite of the redesigns.  It is different enough that it is not directly comparable to Binder's work.  It looks like a modern reinterpretation of the iconography rather than a poor attempt to slightly tweak and redo something that was already damn near perfect.  In trying to recreate the Binder blood and barrel in Quantum of Solace and Skyfall with modern methods, it just looks flat and bland.

Let me just say this.  To the people that don't think the gunbarrel is necessary anymore, some of us do want it back at the beginning of the film.  No one, and I mean NO ONE ever said the lack of a gunbarrel at the beginning of Craig's films made any of those films worse.  I have "Skyfall" as my number two Bond movie of all time, and to think it accomplished that feat without a gunbarrel at the beginning!  That said, I and many others would like to see a little piece of tradition restored with the gunbarrel back in its rightful place.  And that's even after how well it worked at the end of "Skyfall".

So yes, put it back in it's proper place for Bond 24.  Many people like it there, just as many people like the more serious tone of Craig's Bond films.  There will be a time and place for a more campy Bond film, whether it's Bond 24 or after Craig leaves the franchise.  Ditto with the gunbarrel.  Now it's our turn to have the gunbarrel back at the beginning, at least for the next film.

Seriously. It doesn't look dated at the beginning, it looks classic and awesome. They just need to do it well. Also don't get why they lost the original Binder shadow patterning, always loved that. It looks like a boring, dull sewer pipe in QoS and a naff, shiny thing in Skyfall. They nailed it with the poster too! Why didn't they use that design?

Perfect classic yet modern looking gunbarrel design - look at the detail and perspective in it. That would make an amazing opening, especially in a cinema, it would feel like you were inside the original Binder gunbarrel more than just watching a flat looking, boring version of the gunbarrel that doesn't really draw you in as much:

^ Exactly. The poster led me to believe that an awesome looking gunbarrel would kick off the film. I felt cheated.

I expected the barrel to be at the start of Skyfall. When it wasn't, I was a little surprised, but didn't feel cheated with them using it in promotional material. They didn't throw the thing out. I suspect Mendes will have it at the start of Bond 24, but then again, you never know. After two barrels at the end, it's no longer a shock to the system. To be honest, now they've started doing this, I wouldn't really have a problem if they continued on.

I really want them to return the gun barrel to the beginning. It belongs there!

If they return to the Binder design, that'd be a major plus, but I'm happy to have new barrel designs so long as they're better than the blandy-blandy-bland-bland of SF's grey monstrosity.

Let them be creative.  Experiment a little.  If they could find a way to put it smack dab in the middle I'd be all for it.

D'you know what I'd rather they were creative with? The plot, storytelling, characters etc. The gunbarrel being put at the end or in the middle or in 5 different places, each a different colour is just a cheap stunt. It's not that creative and the last few designs have been pretty shoddy. One of them looked like a sewer pipe. Put the creativity into making an awesome looking design.. like the one they did in the SF poster and then just discarded for 'cheap', boring tat.

Agreed. I really wouldn't care if the next film didn't even have a gunbarrel.

To me it's summed up with this. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There was nothing wrong with the gun barrel the way it was but since DAD they've been trying to reinvent it. They should get rid of the heahache and go with the tried and true path.
