Empire review is in http://www.empireonl....asp?FID=137076

For once i am underwhelmed with Empire's review. Not as insightful as Newman's past reviews of CR and QOS, the writing is very lazy, especially in the last paragraph. Doesn't matter though, it got the 4 stars i expected it to get.

Is that all we care about now? Stars, thumbs and ratings.

I'm not surprised about this. First it was Bourne, now it's Batman. In 4-6 years time, it will be the "next big thing" that Bond is supposedly following. I think EON was hoping to emulate Batman's success and feels slightly bruised by the general audience's reaction to QOS. Whilst most said TDK was superior to BB (which I don't personally believe), most would say CR was quite a bit better than QOS. So to be honest, I felt right from the off that they might try to retrace that template somewhat and up their game. Visually, it does have certain parallels with the Nolan style, Mendes even name checks him in one of his media interviews. But I'm hoping that is as far as the similarities have gone and all the effort has gone on the story/characters. Where Nolan falls flat is with the warmth of his characters (and this is hopefully the area where Mendes will excel). We can make our own minds up about this in a few weeks!

Well we want the film to be good don't we Shark? I was just commenting on the lazyness of Newman's review, which isn't like him.

And by the sounds of all these reviews, we have a cracker on our hands.

have any movies change some stuff after getting early reviews and make some minor changes to the film? Could this happen here? maybe the gunbarrel at the end is some test only

No. Because then the reviewed film isn't indicative of what the audiences end up seeing. The gun barrel is at the end.

Not sure of how often these things are done, or in what order (ie, focus groups and review screenings) but I do remember being a part of a Saint test screening that had two showings of the film, each with different endings.

I am not sure how this played out with reviews.

I was expecting positive reviews, but five stars is nuts. And now I'm going to be keeping my eyes peeled for LALD in-jokes.

And let's not forget that Jaws died in the first test screenings of TSWLM. The let him survive and even return in TSWLM because the test audiences liked him so much.

Gunbarrel, Shmunbarrel, as long as we have a great movie (and it sounds a lot like it), I'll say it with Rhett Buttler: "Frankly, my dear..."

Yep! I'm going to wager it's an alligator hopping homage.

The selection of reviews I've read for the first time this morning (IGN, Empire, Total Film, Variety) really are fantastic. So good to see that most reviewers are putting SKYFALL alongside CASINO ROYALE as one of the finest in the franchise. 13 days to go.

A lot of the reviews mention the fact that there is a set up at the end of the film. I know we all think it's

but what if it's a James Bond Will Return In |insert Bond 24 name here|

You know, based on how the movie stats and how it (apparently) ends, I think the gunbarrel would actually be better at the end

Whilst I'm aware star ratings don't really matter, it's the words that are important, I do think there's a real critical snobbery involved when a popcorn flick gets a great, glowing, criticism-free review, but then only gets 4 stars.

I predicted Empire giving Skyfall 4 stars. The list of genre classics they have failed to recognise, and given 4 stars to, is endless. Casino Royale is, I think, worthy of 5 stars and it sounds as though Skyfall is too. Is Looper REALLY a 5 star film but Casino Royale only 4? I doubt there's anything the producers could do to secure a 5 star review from Empire for a Bond film. It's snobbery I tell you!

This is all extremely encouraging.

Of course, with Mendes at the helm it was to be expected that reviewers were gushing about this. But the film seems to merit it, too.

A tough act to follow.

Lest we not forget that Sam Mendes himself said, at the press conference for Skyfall, that he's open to returning for another go in the director's chair..

How do we, the Bond fans of the CommanderBond.net forums, the premier #1 Bond site on the internet, launch a campaign to bring back Sam Mendes to the director's chair? It's obvious he works well with Craig, he loves Bond and he knows how to make a 5* Bond movie!

I would love that, but I doubt if he'll jump right back in and do Bond 24. It seems likelier that he'd pull a Campbell and come back a few films down the road.

If Skyfall really is that great, that would make Sam Mendes the first director since Martin Campbell to make a top class Bond movie.

Hey, here´s an idea, we´re fans, so let´s do the petition for real. Cmon gents and ladies, let´s create a page with some real signatures on it. I bet it would hit the news following the many positive reviews this one is getting. Cmon, who can create the page? I´m serious.

Let's wait till we've seen the movie first. We'll end up looking like right dicks supporting Mendes (somewhat) blindly. But after the 26th, bring it on!

Probably, then we´d send it to EON with a thank you note and the torn I.O.U they gave us back in 2002 ;)

No Gun Barrel at the beginning! BOYCOTT!

In Casino Royale, Campbell, MGW and BB decided to put the barrel before the titles because Bond got his 00 number.

OK

In Quantum of Solace we were supposed to have the barrel back at the beginning because it had to return to the formula. But then it was at the end because Marc Forster, MGW & BB tought the Vesper arc was finished and blah blah blah

Now... we stupid traditionalist Bond fans waited four years to get a CLASSIC Bond film with Skyfall and....

Spoiler

Really, won't be bashing the film. In fact, i think it'd be very good. But not a classic one!
Not avobe GoldenEye or Tomorrow Never Dies at least

Eton is a poncy boys school where all toffs go, and a lot of bumming takes places.
Also Nicolas Suszczyk your Forster joke cracked me up.
