"Three months ago, you lost the drive containing the identity of every agent embedded in terrorist organisations across the globe."

Is it plausible that such a drive could ever exist? That M, or MI6, would ever be foolish enough to create such a thing?

drive containing the identity of every agent embedded in terrorist organisations across the globe

It's hard to imagine any intelligence agency displaying such utter incompetency, let alone the British Secret Service...

They got to keep it somewhere I suppose. Not terribly improbable that such a list would exist or needed. Just look at how and what has been uncovered about secret services in the world in the last ten years through technology.  Though I am sure it would be a highly secure and encrypted file, that's no problem for Silva, right?

They've got to keep the information, yes.

But I find it hard to believe it would all be stored on one particular drive.

It's possible the data was compressed onto that one drive.

Surely, these examples only strengthen my point. If classified material is prone to go "missing" then why keep a single drive containing the identity of every agent embedded in terrorist organisations across the globe? Sounds like a ridiculous idea, if you ask me. Although, I'm sure people like Silva are very thankful for it...

Actually if something sounds like a ridiculous idea chances are it's standard operating procedure in some branch or other of any conceivable administration and government subsidiary. You'd be surprised what kind of utter lunacy the human mind can create, if only there's an official monicker attached to it...

Study what I studied in college and you would not be surprised what the brain can come up with. If you can think it, then someone has more than likely attempted it. Just because it's incredibly stupid and doesn't make sense, does not mean it isn't plausible.
