I've been working for a good while on a favourite film list. (I've been hunting for the thread I posted it in, and I cannot find it for the life of me, but I think it's time for a new one anyway), So yes, I absoloutely adore the world of film, and I've came up with a list of my favourites. Once I got past 10, I found it really hard not to keep going, so this is what I came up with.

It's hard to make a sequenced list, but some of my favourites are (apart from Bond, of course) The Exorcist, Der Untergang, Die Hard, Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, Sergio Leones The Dollar Trilogy, DePalmas Scarface, Magnolia, Das Boot, The Wicker Man. I am a huge fan of vintage British horror films - Hammer, Amicus, Tigon...

Very interesting list, Mharkin. But I seem to detect a lack of comedies...

I´ll try to put up my favorites in a list - but I don´t think that I can rank them in general - maybe only per genre. Because how can I compare my favorite comedy "Broadcast News" with my favorite Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me"?

Here are films we both would declare our favorites (taken from your list):

The Shining (1980)
Psycho (1960)
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)
From Russia With Love (1963)
Alien (1986)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Die Hard (1988)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Jaws (1975)
Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)
Goldfinger (1964)
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
North By North West (1959)
Dr No (1962)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Casino Royale (2006)
The Dark Knight (2008)

I noticed this too. Comedies are a really difficult genre in my eyes. I hardly find any of them funny. Or maybe I just haven't seen any decent ones yet. Please feel free to recommend some! :)

Good list, Mharkin. There are certain films that I watch over and over, though I don't necessarily consider them the best films of all time. They've just become a habit:

Drunken Angel
The Bad Sleep Well
High and Low
(come to think of it, I love every non-samurai Kurosawa film made before 1970...)
The Day of the Jackal
Coup de Grâce (Volker Schlöndorff)
Ánimas Trujano
Der Untergang
Jaws
Milk
Frost/Nixon
Death and the Compass (Alex Cox)
The Remains of the Day
The Great Escape
Fargo
The World of Apu
The Godfather, Part II
Sholay
The Wicker Man
The Remains of the Day
M (Fritz Lang)
The Boys From Brazil
The Empire Strikes Back
Bladerunner
Pulp Fiction (the only Tarantino film that I enjoy)

I also watch fewer comedy films, but I watch these all the time:

The Big Lebowski
A Fish Called Wanda
Dr Strangelove
Blazing Saddles
Duck Soup
Horse Feathers
Stalag 17 (I guess it's a comedy)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Lightereul Kyeora (a stupid Korean action-comedy that I bought by accident, and subsequently grew to love)

By year for the last 40 years: (5 Bond films)

1984: Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ('84 was a weak year)

No way! It was possibly the best year ever for so called "popcorn" films. Just look at all the films here which have been firmly cemented in pop culture lore. You may not like all of them, I don't either, but it's a pretty impressive tally

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Terminator, Gremlins, Amadeus, The Natural and A Nightmare on Elm Street are all tops for me in 1984.

Well it's just MY opinion. I didn't really like most of those other films. I'm not a fan of Beverly Hills Cop. It's not bad, just kind of meh. Temple of Doom is the worst Indiana Jones film (Before you yell at me, I don't count Crystal Skull) and I never liked Revenge of the Nerds. I might actually rank Ghostbusters for '84. I got the year wrong on that one, I thought it was 1985.
