It's 1967 in the MAD MEN universe and, without wanting to spoil anything about the story, two of the main characters go to the cinema to see "Casino Royale" - and a quick grab of the theme song is played.

Then, over a montage at the end of the episode, Nancy Sintra's theme to "You Only Live Twice" plays.

The two songs made an enjoyable episode quite brilliant. I was ecstatic at the Casino Royale theme moment - a few notes and I knew what it was, but hearing "You Only Live Twice" over scenes of Don Draper in a black suit, wandering into the shadows and finding himself in a bar. It was all very 007.

Technically, it's too early in the year for "You Only Live Twice" to be playing - it's April. But the songs at the end of the episodes don't always line up with history exactly. Only the songs heard by the characters in the episode are played at the appropriate time. And Casino Royale did open in April 1967.

yeah, that was great! I have to say Don Draper at the end was very Bond-like. A very cool moment :)

Did you notice that Jon Hamm was listed as a Producer for that episode. I do not know whether he's been listed as a producer before. I'll come out with it: He wants to follow Craig as the next Bond. Those two songs were his doing. He's working with a voice coach on an English accent and will start with a physical trainer in the Mad Men off-season. He's going to have those bags under his eyes surgically removed.
There ! That ought to do it ! Although, I'm sure, someone else already started up the rumor mill. No matter how ridiculous this "rumor" would be, no matter how much I make it clear THIS IS A JOKE AND THERE'S NOTHING TO IT AND I MADE IT ALL UP, it would not matter.
Oh, for good measure, Lyndsey Lohan has already been signed on as a stunt driver and to play a part.

I'm not so sure. From the season premiere, they pulled The Look of Love (it seems that Bond songs were predestined this season!) because the timing was off.

We don't know how much time passed between Megan asking for Don's help and Megan filming her commercial. It could very well be June 1967 by the last scene.

Aside from Mishipman's astute observation that there was no indicator of how much time passed before we saw Megan filming a commercial, as well as Roger Sterling mooning the audience, and Don getting hit on (does he take the bait ??? what do you think ?), the show's producer Weiner himself said they take artistic license with the end-title music. That comes from a direct quote in the same article linked by Midshipman.

He's been a producer all season. I think it was a good move, as all around this season was the best so far. Of course the near complete lack of Betty may have helped..... ;)

I haven't seen the episode yet, but the scene above rather sums up Don Draper - married (twice!) but open to temptation again. As does the song "You Only Live Twice" - right from the outset of Mad Men, Draper has been leading another life and is not the person he says he is.

The end scene also signified the return of the "real" Don Draper. The whole season he was completely different, but that's more the Draper that the audience is used to. Though honestly, I liked the character progression but I guess Don Draper got's to have it.

More like the ratings got to have it. No doubt 'bad boy' Don draws more viewers. Personally, I find Don's lack of a progression quite disappointing ... but I guess soap opera trumps story.

Jon Hamm would NEVER be considered for the part of OO7. He was born & lives on the wrong side of the pond.

You forget your history ... Never Say Never as American John Gavin was offered the role of James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever before Connery changed his mind.

Gavin was Bond. He signed a contract and was paid for the film even though he never shot a second. Adam West was also considered for Bond as was, shudder, Burt Reynolds.

Nowadays, however, enough Brits are active in Hollywood I doubt there will ever be an American considered again.

There never has been a shortage of Brits in Hollywood ... but what does that matter anyway? Bond films have always been about location shoots with most studio work done at Pinewood Studios. So who happens to be in Hollywood is surely not a factor. A Brit playing a Brit ... that's another thing and one that I'm fine with.
