No doubt we will be soon having to contend with the "this girl is more of an equal to Bond" mantra when the final goods rarely come wrapped like that. Baz B from the Daily Mail is a gossipy old queen. Yes, he can be plugged in to bits and bobs but he is a little grinning stirrer who proclaims all sorts for a headline. And he does write for the Daily Mail.
Mendes has/will attracted a big turn-out of names - both for real and in the press. And because Mendes is perhaps the first Bond director the press are more aware of professionally it represents a field day/month/year of rumouring ease.
I suggest we may see a 1980's mini-series style big rosta of names in this one.
I can't wait for the cat to hit the pigeons when the leading lady is announced!!

"And according to Bamigboye’s source, “It’s the first of a new generation of Bond films, and the ideas Mendes has push the film into darker territory where the characters are modern, mature and challenging.”
Man, this kind of talk worries me.
Yes, but back in the days of Halle Berry and Lee Tamahori, "darker territory" and high-flown talk about "characterisation" meant next to nothing. With the likes of Mendes, Bardem and Fiennes onboard, it might actually be done properly this time.
It's like if Woody Allen told me "I'm gonna kick your !", I wouldn't be worried. OTOH, if Mike Tyson told me "I'm gonna kick your !" I'd be running a mile.

Quite. Somebody wake me when these films become fun again."And according to Bamigboye’s source, “It’s the first of a new generation of Bond films, and the ideas Mendes has push the film into darker territory where the characters are modern, mature and challenging.”

And IF not only Bardem but also Fiennes are cast then this one is already shaping up as a highly intriguing Bond film.

Fiennes as the lead henchmen/menace and Bardem pulling the strings would/could be epic IMO.

Moreover, Ralph Fiennes would have been a great James Bond, he's a great actor, and his physique looks pretty good.

Sigh...I hope it'll be good, but it seems that with every new Bond film there's the promise of taking the series in "a new direction." After the next few films there won't be any directions left to take it in.
That said, Fiennes is an interesting idea, we'll see what happens.

Well, Fiennes with Bardem sounds like a great match as far as baddies go. I'd just like for Bond 23 to be a "stand alone" film in as much as Goldfinger was. Let's take a stop from all the Quantum stuff. A villain out for nothing but his own gain. No world domination stuff. I think the series needs that again.
Yes. But as zencat said, I'd like a memorable villain, a Goldfinger of the 21st century. But I also want the villain to be frightening, as Sánchez. A mixture between Sánchez and Goldfinger would be great. A mastermind, but also a man who can pull out a gun and confront Bond.

As I said in the other thread, this is the guy who told us Bond 18 would be called 'Avatar'. Bond rumours from the Daily Mail I tend not to believe too early.

It's funny how people see things differently. I see Fiennes as the refined leader, pulling the strings and Bardem as the the "Red Grant" like muscle.

If someone doesn't like CR/QOS/the reboot all that well, all rumors/news are bad and the "death of Bond."
If someone (heaven forbid!) actually likes the new films, even prefers them over the previous most recent era (would that be blasphemous?), such news about Oscar-calibre talent involved with 23 is welcome and hardly comparable to some of the lowest-common-denominator Bonds of the past 20 years or so IMO: the last two films have shown a very clear and consistent take on Bond and his world unlike the odd mash-up attempts to "try something different" LTK or TWINE. One might not like like the current direction EON has decided to take the series, but its the most intentional and internally consistent adjustment to Bond since the series began (IMHO) and certainly looks to be heading full-steam in the same direction for 23.
EON has thrown darts in the past hoping to inject Bond with new oomph, to varying degrees of success; the reboot is a massive franchise overhaul, wildly successful and something all involved seem very keen on continuing. The VM (Vocal Minority) will rant and rage but EON has never given a toss about fans not liking this or that change to the series. BO is all, and CR/QOS are the template for more of the same.
Bardem and Fiennes are very in line with Mikkelsen and Amalric, hope EON lands both.

That quote excites me. I wonder if Mendes will helm several Bond flicks? I'm all for change but I don't want a film heavily laden with action like QOS and the Brosnan flicks. If Bond 23 has the same action to dialogue ratio as CR then I'll be content. 15 minutes more dialogue whether it is character or plot development would be even better. The Bond films can be equal parts thriller, equal parts action and still perform splendidly at the Box Office. The Bond team would probably gain more respect as film makers too if these movies were more in line with the early Connery flicks.

Agreed. I am not for A list Hollywwod actors like Kevin Spacey and I wouldn't say these two being considered are quite that. I've always been a fan of Ralph Fiennes.

Well, Fiennes can play thugs (SCHINDLER'S LIST, IN BRUGES). He's not just good for playing sensitive, well-educated, upper-crust Englishmen - look at STRANGE DAYS, for instance. I think he'd be an inspired choice for the series' new Red Grant, if indeed that's the sort of role he's under consideration for.

The Constant Gardener?

Well, I think Fiennes is pretty A-list, to be honest (or at least I can't see that someone like Spacey is any more "A-list" - would producers trust him over Fiennes to open a movie?), and Bardem is verging on big-name status.
Bardem and Fiennes are "very in line with Mikkelsen and Amalric" insofar as they're all very fine actors, but Bardem and Fiennes are much bigger names. I'd never even heard of Mikkelsen or Amalric until they became part of the world of Bond, and I like to think I'm fairly well-informed on the film scene. By contrast, Fiennes, at least, is a household name, or at least in Britain.
Just as Sam Mendes is unquestionably the most famous-in-his-own-right director ever to be hired for a Bond film, Bardem and Fiennes are surely the most well-known actors ever cast as Bond villains (if, of course, there's any truth to this Fiennes rumour).

Oh, I agree, even not knowing exactly how the two characters are written, both actors could pull off either roll.

Fiennes shoulda played Bond in '94!
