Bond is a brand name now: people expect certain things of 'James Bond' including spectacle.

That´s for sure, and I doubt we´d see an "alternate franchise" while they´re making the movies which I doubt will ever take period piece route. If they would do a as-it-was-written-Bond television movie series of it might would cost a lot, no question about it, perhaps more than War And Remembrance for instance.
If there will be a period piece Bond, I´d be willing to bet that it'd come in form of a television movie.

How exactly would you make a replica of a 30's Bentley, out of interest? What car would you base it on? Where would you get the bodywork?

Movies and television series are an industry of make believe, isn't it so? I have some friends and relatives working in the finnish film industry and it's simply amazing what professional art designers, etc can so, like creating convincing looking WW2-era tanks which run on golf cart motors and are made of fiberglass. And they cost a tiny fraction what a real tank would cost. I'm sure there a thousands of pictures, sketches and technical manuals of vintage Bentleys so for a professional team recreating convincing replica which would pass of a real thing even when moving wouldn't be much of a feat. It's all about make believe and magic of illusion. I understand your skepticism about the idea but I believe it could be done. It´s completely another question should it.

I've just now gotten around to watching MAD MEN on dvd...*EXCELLENT* show, but I don't see a "trend" yet. What other shows are you talking about

They're in the works. NBC has Playboy, a drama about Bunnies set in 60s Chicago and ABC has Pan Am, about 60s era swinging stewardesses.
