Some theaters today go pretty far promoting films with large posters, stadies and especially large statues like Silver Surfer, Hulk, Kung Fu Panda and The Simpsons. The statues I have seen looked wonderful and cost a mint but some theaters did their part way back in the 60's too. Never seen a photo like this before from back then.

Many of the photographs below show some of the original publicity work of the late Mr. William WM Gourlay.
Note particularly, the golden mannequin on the bed for 'Goldfinger'.

They really used to go all out back in the day. I love seeing all that old footage with the huge marquees and elaborate set-ups and the pictures of those designs.
They have some nice displays now, but they seem to be competing with how many other films at a multiplex. It's not like one film can dominate anymore at just one theater.

It still has a powerful effect today. You can see how fans were bowled over back in the sixties.
Great visual imaging

Hi,
William WM Gourlay was my father and he regularly put this kind of effort into publicity and was regognised by Disney on a couple of occassions!
There are some other examples on my site here http://www.kinemagigz.com/cinemas.htm and select 'The Regal' (1931)
Enjoy!
Ghoulz.
