I was thinking about Bond 23 last night and I thought that, if M was a woman, why not Q? What do you think? Should Q be female?

I don't think Q should be replaced by a man or indeed a woman.

So you don't want Q at all?

Can't see the need really. Could be persuaded if the casting was spot on I spose, but for me Desmond was Q, and IMO it was seeing him that the audiences responded not so much the character itself

But as a man or a woman?

I'd welcome a more literal interpretation (as close as possible) of Major Boothroyd from the novels. Perhaps only sparingly referred to as Q or only mentioning the Q Branch department.

I would not mind Q's return, though as Vauxhall said, a more literal interpretation.

Either that, or I'd like a more realistic approach. For example, it has been mentioned on the forum before that Q and Moneypenny both could have easily been in Casino Royale without the characters affecting the serious approach. Moneypenny could have taken Villiers spot, while Q could have been the man who puts the tracking chip in Bond's arm. I think it would be great to have a serious Q character like that, as nobody can ever take the place of Desmond.

I think a Q'ute would work but not since Judi Dench took over as M. If moneypenny comes back that would make it all women working at MI6. Not that that is necessarily bad but that doesn't seem like the ideal working conditions for Bond.

I have a better idea, bring back Villiers (or keep Tanner) as M's secretary and give Q a female assistant whom can interact with Bond as Moneypenny would do. :(

Yeah Blackfire, we saw Q have an assistant in TWINE (R, AKA the DAD and EON Q), and the DAD and EON Q had that Japanese chick assistant, but she didnt do much with Bond.
It would be nice for a kinda Female Assistant for Q that actually does something rather than walk around in a lab coat with big animated breasts.
If the Actual Q must come back, we can either:
Get John Clese Back
Have a Desmond Lleywin look-a-like with Phil Proctor voice overs
Budget cuts could mean we hire the hobo Jerry "Smelly" Jenkins from Boston to keep costs down.

I think the first option sounds better.

Or we could just reboot the character and have a completely new actor take the role.

Sounds good :( Desmond is Q and any attempt to replace him will fall short.

I want Major Boothroyd in the next few Bond movies... if necessary.
Not Uncle Q.

Desmond was Uncle Q. We don't need another one of those.

Agreed. Quartermaster or Major Boothroyd would be fine. No Q, though. We also had that Uncle Q briefly with John Cleese!

I don't think that the franchise needs the Q character to return in any form. I don't really see any compelling reason in which the character should be featured in any upcoming Bond film.

We just need a Q, man or woman....if there was a Q in the latest Bond, I missed it. Gadgets were part of the Joy of Bond, what made him different from other action heroes. Return to the original formula, Please, Barbara Broccoli, if you are listening....

Well, they could bring in Q, but not have any ridiculous gadgets. Even if there were gadgets, the producers could make them believable, and not DAD ridiculous.

You didn't miss it. Q wasn't in Quantum of Solace. To be fair, though, he wasn't in Live and Let Die, or Casino Royale either.

They could go that route, but the gadget-less CR and QoS (if one excludes the ever present cellphones in the films) has been a refreshing change from the gadget-filled Brosnan films, and I really don't want to see EON go back to the old formula of Bond filmmaking. I like the fact that the Craig films have not had to take a two or three minute break near the beginning of the film for the mandatory Q and Moneypenny scenes, and hopefully that continues well into the future.

They tried that with James Bond. And then it takes 4 years to snap out of "Its my first day" to the classic smooth Charater we know and love.
No, dont reboot our favourite James Bond charater.

Thank you sir, you just made me chuckle.
It would be interesting if Jaws was a robot dog, but not Q.
We could either
