When reading a Gardner novel, we expect the numerous double/triple crosses that happen where just about every other character is really someone else. Getting even to where it's not a surprise anymore.
That's the beauty of Benson's double crosses, you don't see'em coming. (At least I usually don't) and some cases they're even surprising. (The end of NDOD which I won't mention in case someone hasn't read it). Also, they don't regularly occur in every book.
