SOME TITLES FOR THE JAPAN BOOK

"TSUNAMI RISING" (from NDOD; describes Yoshida perfectly)
"SOLAR PLEXUS" (related to the "Rising Sun" & to the vulnerable underbelly of the human anatomy; a metaphor to describe Yoshida's target which may be vulnerable to attack. Fleming's favourite words)
"LOOK DEATH IN THE FACE" (from Bond's Japanese style poem in the YOLT novel. I quote:
"You only live twice
Once when you are born
And once when you look death in the face")
"ECLIPSE OF THE RISING SUN" (darkness reigns during an eclipse; a metaphor to describe Yoshida and the feeling of impending doom his terror attacks may have on the world)
"RISING SUN, FALLING SKY" (same as above)
"SUNRISE IN A FALLEN SKY" (same as above. Poetic, I think)
"EYE OF THE DIVINE STORM" (based on the word, kamikaze, meaning "divine wind")

You know, I would have no problem with that title. In fact, I think it would be a GREAT title for the Japan Book. Nice going, scaramanga.scaramanga (04 Oct, 2001 07:49 p.m.):
I know its pretty generic but I would love it if he called the book MR KISS KISS BANG BANG.
Thanks Zencat, lets hope that this WILL be the title. I could just imagine Bond and some Japanese heroine lying in bed at the end of the book, and her saying: "James darling, in Japan, a man like yourself would be called 'Mister Kiss Kiss Bang Bang'. I think it rather suits you". Or something like that. Anybody else think MR KISS KISS BANG BANG should be the title?

Scissors Cut Paper
The Impossible Mission
The Death Collector
Instant Japan
Blood and Thunder
Sparrow's tears
Out of these, for some reason, I like Scissors Cut Paper and Instant Japan. Although, I still prefer MrKKBB. Maybe I should start a petition and give Glidrose a good kick up the .

I think (which can be dangerous ) it should be Oc-to-puss-y.zencat (20 Oct, 2001 02:41 a.m.):
Oct-toe-pussy?
But what the hell, I didn't do all that well in English Grammar at school.

What with kamikazes and the code of the Samurai, I think that title could fit in okay.zencat (04 Oct, 2001 05:35 p.m.):
I always liked Raymond's original title for High Time to Kill; "A BETTER WAY TO DIE." ...

Exactly. The only drawbacks could be that he used it as a chapter title in HTTK, he would have two books in a row that had "Die" in the title, and I'm wondering if Glidrose's original objection to this title (whatever that may be) would still apply. But I can forgive all these.Jacques Nexus (08 Oct, 2001 10:11 a.m.):

Good idea Zencat !. Benson would have to come up with a nifty villain's name. Let's review the Benson villains' names:zencat (15 Oct, 2001 08:49 p.m.):
Though I don't think it's right for the Japan Book (Yoshida?), I'm a little surprised RB has yet to name a book after a villain (i.e.; Goldfinger, Brokenclaw). This is practically a Bond tradition. I say Benson 7 needs to feature a Goldfinger/Brokenclaw level villain and be named after that villain! (Of course, this is easy for me to say.)
THACKERAY
ROMANOS/ VOLOPOLOUS/ DECADA
LE GERANT/ UNION
MARQUIS
ESPADA
YOSHIDA
Well...the above certainly DON'T make good titles. Benson would have to come up with a HUMDINGER FOR #7 (& "7" IS THE CHARM !).

But, Benson 7 will be published in 2003, the 50th anniversary of Casino Royale. So should the title have GOLD in it, as appropriate for 50th anniversaries? Or be a one-worder title named after the villain?

Interesting argument, zencat. I don't believe in the Japan rumours, but if hypothetically speaking, EON & GLIDROSE were fighting over a JAPAN TITLE then that would mean the following titles are 'up in the air' for consideration:zencat (10 Oct, 2001 08:54 p.m.):
In light of the rumors that BOND 20 may be set partially in Japan, I can't help but wonder if this is the reason RB has yet to name his Japan Book? Remember, TFOD was originally going to be called "The World is Not Enough." Along with using more than a few plot elements from RB's 2nd book, Eon ended up using his title as well. I've always wondered what the politics behind this was? Was there a fight about who would use this title? Doesn't make sense that the title was good enough for Eon but not for Glidrose? I just wonder if there's a political drama re the titles playing out at this moment?
Or maybe I just have way too much time on my hands?
SHATTERHAND
THE DEATH COLLECTOR, etc.
Personally I think it is too good to be true, but you raise a fascinating topic.

If it ain't going to be used for a film, why not use "Shatterhand"? On the basis that Shatterhand was in Japan in the first place, and Benson is very (over) fond of tying his books in with Fleming's. Not sure how he'd do it on this occasion, but that's his problem.
Death to Spies, although a little "deathy"
Tick Tock Boom Ow (this is a joke)
Tsunami Rising sounds absolutely fine. I'm not too worried about the title of the book, just what's in it.

SCORPIUS is another villain title...though it doesn't seem to conform to your rule. You are right, none of the Benson villain's names are compound words...so Benson needs to come up with one as a title.zencat (20 Oct, 2001 02:06 a.m.):
Seems like all the good one-word Bond titles, whether they be a villains name or a mission name, are compound words -- or at least sound like compound words
GOLD-FINGER
THUNDER-BALL
MOON-RAKER (a sound like: not sure what a "raker" is)
OCTO-PUSSY (ditto)
GOLDEN-EYE

Boy, you just reminded me of something!zencat (20 Oct, 2001 03:22 a.m.):
"Mommy, mommy! Today teacher taught us how to say octopussy!"
(smack!)
Way back when, my nephew told me a story of when his high school class participated in the school's song festival one year. The theme was movie songs, and his class was represented by a group singing All Time High.
I said "well OK, so what".
My nephew said that there was an in joke in the class that no one picked up on but was purposely done.
The group consisted of eight girls! :-D
Sorry folks, that this is way off topic, but I just had to recant this.
