I think it had something to do with them not being able to fit him into the plot.

Actually, I think it had something to do with a TV contract he had at the time. He was acting in a programme and he couldn't break away from it to be in LALD. That is why he's only mentioned and not seen.

No. go to hmss.com and read redenius's story about q. He didnt star in it because people thought the films used to much gadgetry.

I don't know why he wasn't in this film, but it would've been kewl to have Q explain that espresso machine in Bond's flat.

It might have sounded sumthin' like this:

Q: "Coffee beans go in here"

Bond: nodding casually

Q: "Press THIS button!"

* click * BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ....

Bond: Looking around for hiding Italian Spy girl

Q: "Double-O-seven...Do pay attention!"

Bond: "Sorry, Q..."

Hmmm, if M was terse over what he thought was misuse of government funds to repair Bond's watch, he would have gone ballistic over that coffee machine if it was supplied by Q Branch for personal use.

I've heard several different stories as to why he wasn't in it. These range from the aforementioned contract to do a series he couldn't get out of and the producers wanting to go in a different direction from the gadgets to the producers simply not wanting him being flown to New Orleans. The last one doesn't make a lot of since since it seems he could have just done some work in the studio to get the scenes shot.

It's one of those great mysteries we may never solve.

If they had used the book's plot, and Q, then we'd have the scene where Bond gets all the diving gear--except the shark-repellant*--but Q would be there to supply it, and no doubt Bond would have a witty line about why there was no shark repellant.

*Apparently this stuff doesn't work anyway, so Bond would have gotten that chunk out of his shoulder either way.

I always heard he didn't appear in LALD because he was doing some TV work.

I have read (belive it was in THE INCREDIBLE WORLD OF 007) that Desmond was hired to promote DAF around the globe and therefor wasent able to act in LALD.

Thats what I have always belived in. :)

Perhaps it was a combination of reasons that conspired to keep Desmond from appearing in LALD...He was doing a TV show at the time I know that, but it is quote possible that he was also out promoting DAF.

I can't buy his promoting DAF considering LALD came out long after DAF faded from theaters.

Maybe Q balked at appearing in the film once he learned he had no love scenes with either the Italian girl or Jane Seymour?

(Juss having some fun...)

It was all part of a plan to try to make Roger's Bond seem distant from Sean's Bond. Roger doesn't wear a tux, order a vodka martini, he was given much more humor, and he was not given a Q scene.

Come to think of it, that's a stupid reason for not being in LALD. ( I always thought it was the TV thing anyways).
That's like saying... oh Pierce could not do Bond 21 cause he is still promoting DAD.
I don't think that Saltzman and Broccoli would have Desmond touring the world when a new bond movie was being made. Right?

So I don't believe it dispite it being in the Legacy. But if its true.....

I agree Jeff007, I believe it was because of his TV commitments.

With a new James Bond coming in there was apush to remove all of the gadgety of Diamond Are Forvever . Plus from what i have read Desmond Llewelyn was engage with making a Television series . Still nothing is either gained or losted from his not apeeraing in Live and Let Die . The M / Moneypenny scene at Bond flat works rather well .

I always liked that scene with Bond in the kitchen...

M: Is that all it does?

And the whole exchange over the watch, bullet and spoon.
