We all Know that the majority of CBn members are not Die Another Dat fans :P but watching it last night its kinda grown on me so what DO you LIKE about Die Another Day.

1. The HoverCraft Chase - The Whole thing looked Good
2. The Presence of Miranda Frost - Ditch Berry and make Pike the Bond Girl
3. The Whole Virtual Reality Sequence - Loved the Video Game Style moves and i loved the interiors of Mi6 too
4. Ice Palace set - I cant help it I Love it :)
5. The Death of Graves - A great Death
6. Virtual Reality II - again the Music Score does it for me
7. Brosnans last scene as Bond - "I'm So Good" - "Especially when your Bad!" is delivered greatly and i cant help but feel a little emotion. Come on i grew up with the guy as Bond i cant help but like him (saying that i do think he left at the right time :P)

The first half-hour of DAD looked like it would be one of the best Bond films.

Our Hero being captured, tortured (during the opening credits --- a nice change) and in fear of being out in front of a firing squad was very compelling.

Bond walking into the Yacht Club (with beard and gamey clothing) was 100% attitude and 100% great.

"Ooh, I'm gonna sort of have to... disagree with ya there."

Well, I liked the pretitles sequence, the titles sequence, and a few minutes after said title sequence.

Everything after the first 25 minutes is a slippery slope of jaw-dropping inanity. It's tragic, because things start of so well.

Ditto. The supposedly gritty first half isn't really so much gritty as glossy. I don't buy the torture. The car, the cgi, the hologram stuff ~shudder~.

The fencing was spot on and Miranda Frost is simply a sexy little vixen.

I love that scene. The unfortunate thing is that they changed it slightly pretty soon after the film was released. :P It looked absolutely ridiculous on the very first prints, I mean even more stupid than it does anyway. Very, very funny indeed. :P

A pity they didn't have enough of a sense of humour to leave it the way it was, but it's still a suitably amusing moment. :)

I actually don't have too much problem with Die Another Day, but I'm not a particular fan of the Brosnan films anyway, so perhaps this just comes from different expectations.

That said, I like:

1. Rosamund Pike as Miranda Frost. Best girl in a Brosnan film.

2. The fencing duel. Over-the-top and a copy of the golf game from Goldfinger, but an enjoyable sequence.

3. The Iceland setting. I'm just a sucker for anything Icelandic.

4. The airborne finale. A significant improvement over the limp submarine finale from The World Is Not Enough.

5. Any scene without Jinx in it.

My favorite part of DAD was when it was over :)

Just kidding, there are some parts of DAD that I did enjoy. The pre title was OK at best, Pierce seemed like he was reading for a high school play when acting out the first part of the movie. When he delievered the lines about being traded for Zao, he sounded like he was reading them for the first time.

I enjoyed it when he first got to Cuba (before the clinic), I enjoyed the sword fight at The Blades. I hate to admit it, but I thought the part with Moneypenny and the VR glasses was funny.

I'm Icelandic [censored] A pity you're a fella [censored]

More seriously, the Icelandic setting is fantastic and I think they did it reasonable justice - although they could have used it even more. What pisses me off to no end is all the obviously fake snow around the Ice Palace. :)

The concept of making a modern day adaption of Moonraker.

Loomis, I'm confused - you often state you adore and love *everything* about DIE ANOTHER DAY, but will sometimes make comments stating problems you have with the film in other places. Care to reconcile the two?

Sure, although I can't for the moment think of any particular problems I've mentioned. I'm sure I've aired some gripes about it, but I've no idea what they may have been.

In any case, I expect they were minor, such as "If only they could have done some real location shooting in Korea" and "If only Barry had done the score" - y'know, the kind of stuff that in an ideal world would have been included, although its absence isn't really all that huge an issue.

I may be wrong, but I think I've been consistently extremely positive towards DIE ANOTHER DAY. Were there any specific complaints of mine you were thinking of, Harmsway?

To address the question that is the title of this thread, I think what I like most about DAD is that it's a one-stop greatest hits collection of everything you could possibly want (save for perhaps a couple of things.... such as a Barry score :P ) from a Bond movie, from the gritty and Flemingian to the beyond-Moore ultra-zany. It's a glorious and goofy 40th anniversary celebration of the series, and for that reason alone I'd expect it to be far more highly thought of in fandom than it is. Its generally cold reception baffles me. :) (Although I do recall that most fans did appear to like it at the time of release.)

As for liking everything about it, believe it or not, I'm serious: I can't think of any particular scene that doesn't work or any particular moment where I'm not being thoroughly entertained. Again, remind me of these problems I have with the film.

I liked Brosnan's portrayal as Bond, Raoul was a wonderful character as was Miranda Frost (great under-used). I also liked the idea of Bond being captured and subsequent search for who set him up. I like the Cuba scenes although they could have been better and the following London scenes with M.

The Q scene is excellent as well. John Cleese shows what a match he is for Bond. It's a shame that DAD's highlights aren't celebrated enough - as lots of people have said, Die Another Day had the makings of a great film.

You've aired a number of gripes about the dialogue, which is mostly what I was thinking of.

I'm amazed - I like a good deal of this film, but I would say a lot of the dialogue is pretty naff (if this film had featured some genuine wit, the film's quality would have increased a thousand-fold).

Scenes/things that I personally find particularly poor: Bond and Jinx meeting for the first time (had the opportunity to be beautiful, but some really naff dialogue gets in the way - at least it's shot wonderfully), Zao's make-up job, a lot of the dialogue, and the finale on the plane.

All that said, I enjoy DIE ANOTHER DAY. IMHO, it's definitely the best the Brosnan era had to offer.

Like Loomis, I love DAD (and am not ashamed to admit it :)). However I do have one gripe with it, I think it has one action scene too many. I think they could have cut either the ice boat chase or the car chase and not lost anything, taken as individual sequences, they are quite fun. Taken one after the other though, it's a bit tedious.

Have I? Well, okay, the dialogue's hardly great, but it does the job. Even at its worst, though, it's a heck of a lot better than some of the supposedly clever and classy lines in TWINE.

I'm sure you're right, though, and that I have indeed aired a few complaints about DAD - I mean, I don't actually worship the film. :P Honest. :P Like all films, it has its flaws, but to me they're incredibly minor and don't detract from my enjoyment. :)

Scenes/things that I personally find particularly poor: ... the finale on the plane.

I've never understood why people don't like this. Bond and a beautiful woman kicking seven shades of [censored] in the world's largest aircraft with samurai swords and a villain in a RoboCop outfit as an outer space death ray causes war to break out between North and South Korea, liberally garnished with some truly buttock-clenching puns, and topped off with a freefalling helicopter full of diamonds and a rainstorm of sports cars. What's not to like? And what could be more Bond? In fact, it's a microcosm of the whole wonderfully OTT and everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-entertaining movie, and I love it. :)

There's a time and place for Daniel Craig and a gritty, intelligent return to Fleming by way of Bourne and BATMAN BEGINS (and, believe me, I'm very excited about CASINO ROYALE, and I'm glad it won't be DAD II - or at least I hope it won't be), but this isn't it. [censored]
