Congrats! Which books have you read before? Or is this your first? Anyway, keep going with Live and Let Die, and then Moonraker, which is really suspenseful.

I have also read Casino Royale, and it really is a very good book. Maybe Flemings best, together with Thunderball, which, maybe afterall is my personal favourite.
I got several books to read now. I recently had my birthday and I my nice little father hade gotten me three books which I've never read. Dr.No, You Only Live Twice and From Russia With Love.
I also have Never Send Flowers to read which I bought myself...

Going against the trend here, I have to admit that Casino Royale is one of my least favorite Bond novels, not to say that it isn't good, and I do appreciate it in that its the first Bond adventure. My opinion hadn't changed much when I read it a second time. I enjoyed everything up to Le Chiffre's exit. I found the last third just being about Bond and Vesper to be dull and uninteresting. I really liked the ending though.
I think You Only Live Twice is Fleming's best, and it's also my personal favorite Bond novel of them all, probably tied with Doctor No.

RossMan, I see where you're coming from. I think one thing to bear in mind when you read Casino Royale is that it's a FIRST novel, and as such it's very flawed. Bond isn't as developed as he would be in later novels, and those last few chapters after the death of Le Chiffre seem overly-melodramatic. Still, all things considered, it's an impressive first work and it sets the groundwork for what will follow. I respect the book for no other reasons than those.

Casino Royale was the first Bond novel I ever read. I thought it was good start for a Bond novel. This was a good introduction to the spy we all come to know and love. The ending was a nice a little wrap up to the whole thing. A good torture scene, a nice intro to felix, and the description of Vesper Lynd holding her cigarette like an artist's pencil. After reading it I remember I went through a phase of taking cold showers, speaking french, eating scrambled eggs and listening to hoagy carmichael(of course this is when I was a shy teenage girl).

I know what you mean about overly melodramatic, Hardyboy. When I was writing this in the end of my fanfic screenplay, I was thinking Oh my God, people are going to run out of the cinema when they see this! But I'm going to tone it down a bit, and shorten Bond and Vesper's stay at the hotel.

Casino Royale was the first Fleming novel I read (I'd read one of Benson's novels before) and it still remains my favorite.

Long time, no read! Welcome!
I have yet to see the made to tv drama Casino Royale (not the spoof). Then again I've always say this would have been an appropiate Dalton third film. If memory serves me correctly did Bond wanted to marry Vesper Lynd? It's been awhile since I've read it.
