Wow! Looks like a US paperback that has slipped out early maybe? That's the cover art on Amazon.

And it ended with a low "Buy It Now" price. Damn!

I need this.

Thanks 003.5.

The only weird thing is that amazon lists 368 for the US SilverFin paperback, and this eBay page says 335...

Yep, looks like this is the US paperback. I just nabbed on on eBay for a low Buy It Now price. Looks like these are slipping out early. Wonder if they are in stores yet?

Just got my SilverFin US paperback from eBay. It's a beauty. But one interesting thing... On the back of the book, below the barcode, is written SPECIAL EDITION in red. This is also noted under the barcode on the inside cover. My question is, if this is just the normal US paperback, then why is it "special"? Could it be that these copies selling early on eBay are something unusal? I'll be curious to see if this "Special Edition" notation appears on the copies we find in stores in April.

I'll keep my eyes open for the paperback. I tend to go that route anyhow (I'd rather shell out 7.99 for something I might not like than 22.95.)

Got mine today in the mail. It says Special Edition as well. I guess I'll just have to wait it out and see if it is different.

The paperback is very slick. I think it would have been wise of Miramax to first publish the book as a paperback orginial, like Puffin did in the UK. And a full year wait between hardcover and paperback seems foolish for a children's book. Most stores only stocked a few copies of SilverFin, it's like it never came out here. A larger paperback printing would have been the way to go, IMO, and then a nice limited edition hardcover later on for fans. Puffin did it right.

Think we got ours from the same eBay seller. We'll see...

Indeed.

Something is definitely different. The paperback we both have has a $4.99 price tag, while amazon lists the price as $6.99. Plus, the ISBN's do not match... Yet another oddball edition of SilverFin?

The price and ISBN's don't match? Now that is VERY interesting.

BTW, the US paperback is now shipping from both Amazon and BN.com. Looks like I'm going to have to buy it just to see what may be different.

Do we know yet for certian the official US edition will have the same cover art as this "special edition"? Probably, but the art on BN.com is not this "red stripe" art.

*goes to look* You're right - unless its just a simple case of them providing the wrong artwork?

Guess we'll know when the paperbacks arrive.

Got mine today - they're definitely different. There are two versions of the US paperback. They both use the same cover art, but the differences are:

Regular Version: $6.99, slightly taller, back cover ISBN: 07868366-3, No Blood Fever preview

Special Version: $4.99, slightly shorter, back cover ISBN: 142310113-8, Includes Blood Fever preview, "SPECIAL EDITION" in red on back cover and front inside cover

Very cool.

Wow. Great! We'll just have to wait and see how rare these "special editions" are. Would also love to find out the story on these. I'm assuming the regular paperback also has the Blood Fever preview?

HO, BABY! Now that's a BIG difference!!!

Just ran with the story on my Young Bond site. LINK.

Also contacted the eBay seller. She said she buys all her books from the Scholastic warehouse and had no idea this was anything special. Maybe these are copies earmarked for school libraries?

Could be, I guess. Seems odd though with "Special Edition" written on them solely for that reason though. Nonetheless, this is pretty cool.

"You know you're a Bond fan when you collect this many copies of SilverFin...:D"

Popped it up on the mainpage...

BINGO!

Check out THIS PAGE on the Scholastic website. It looks like SilverFin was a special "Scholastic Book fair" selection. Note the "special price." Sounds like our Special edition. These were probably only available via order through schools. The eBay seller says she got her copies from the Scholastic wearhouse, so those were probably the unsold stock.

Just got my SilverFin paperback regular edition. Very nice.

Another thing I noticed that is different in the Scholastic Special Edition is it contains an ad for the Player One mobile game with one of the Kev Walker illustrations. Also, the copyright page reads "First U.S. Paperback Edition" where the regular paperback reads "First American Edition."

With a 2005 copyright, that's probably the International paperback, not the Scholastic special ed.

I wish eBay sellers would put pics of the actual books on their auctions and not just the Amazon images.

Couldn't agree more. There is little use to just slapping up just any old picture, in my opinion.

I recently bought a second-hand copy of SilverFin at a used bookstore. Turns out it's the 'SPECIAL EDITION' version. I didn't know the significance of that designation until I found this old thread. B)
