In an interview with Charlie Higson over at MI6 he says "There's a lot of violence in the book. There's some quite nasty stuff. It's obviously been slightly toned down compared to the adult books, sadly the Americans have toned it down even more."

It sounds as if the U.S. version will be different than the U.K. edition. Does anybody know if this is true?

That's very disappointing. First, we don't get a UK hardback first. OK, so us collectors have to buy the US hardback version as the true hardback first. Then we find out its not the same version as the UK! What a cock up!

So I guess the US is trying to market it as more a children's book then?

I've recieved my copy last Saturday. Now I'm halfway through and I must say, I'm quite positively surprised. It does not, repeat NOT, read as a childrens book. On the other hand this means, it IS NOT a childrens book. And from the US-publishers side that means certain failure. They expected some HarryPotter/Alexforgothisname-clone to skyrocket their sellings. Now they're in for a surprise as this is not such an easily consumed hype-book. Small wonder they want to make it more accessible to younger kids (though I myself had my first encounter with Bond at the age of 10 in the cinema and read all the Flemings in the two years gap between TSWLM and MR and I don't think it did me any harm).

Quite so. Noticed that immediately as I started reading it today.
