Momentum

A 15-minute short story

"Oh for the sake of momentum..." - Aimee Mann

The cold, motionless eyes stayed focused on the person a few feet away. Those eyes belonged to British Secret Service agent James Bond. Armed with a sniper rifle issued by the weapons branch at MI6 headquarters in London, Bond steadied the weapon against his shoulder and waited for a good opportunity...

A few days earlier, it was a frenetic day in the office of MI6 headquarters. Every staffperson seemed to be in some mad, chaotic rush to go save the world. James Bond was stuck in the middle of it all at his desk, reading through a brand new file in a manilla packet he had recieved earlier in the day from his boss, M. There was nothing that really stuck out about it, simply a British terrorist claiming the age-old threat to destroy a city whereever unless he recieved some extravagent sum of money. The idea grew boring years ago, thought Bond.

Miss Moneypenny, M's personal secretary, came through the hallway, nearly sprinting in her effort to get to some destination, M's office, Bond supposed. She then stopped at his desk, and mentioned a few words that caused Bond to rethink his ideas of what the very man described in the file was like.

Days passed by. For Bond, they seemed to fly by. He was on a small mission now...

Bond's eye finally blinked as he, quietly as he could, cleared his throat. The target was out in the open now. Bond steadied his aim, and fired. Cupid's arrow soared through the air and hit Miss Moneypenny. For Bond did not have a sniper rifle, nor was he on some save-the-world case, it was simply asking M's secretary if she'd like to attend a night of dinner and the theatre with him in honor of February 14th.

He'd hadn't known how many random, chaotic thoughts can pass through one's head when doing something as simple as inviting a girl to dinner.
