In the wake of IFP's announcement that a Young James Bond series of novels would be written, I was at once mortified and then intrigued. How exactly would this work? Not that a young boy suffering after the death of his parents wouldn't make a good story. Not that James Bond as a boy was boring, but how would it work? Would Charlie Higson be allowed to do it right?
While we wait for the first book to see what it's actually like (I reserve judgement, but am highly skeptical), I have written a short piece exploring a thirteen year old Bond's mind and his relationship with his now guardian, Aunt Charmian.
"A Whisper of Love, A Whisper of Hate" isn't really like any of Ian Fleming's stories - not much happens. It's strictly a character piece, trying to find where the Bond we know existed within his thirteen year old self.
