He was good in the Naked Face I thought... as well as the Van Dam movie "The Quest". To be honest.. I'm not terribly familiar with the films Rog has been in aside from bond. I looked him up over at imdb.com (the internet movie database) and it looks like he's hosted a ton of stuff (mainly bond related of course).

I know I've posted this in another thread somewhere.

I'd say my two favorites that Rog did while he was Bond have to be "Gold" and "ffolkes" aka "North Sea Hijack".

I really dug the "ffolkes" character. So anti-Bond. Hardly smooth, bearded, slugging Scotch straight from the bottle, hated women, loved cats and practicing needle-point when he needed to think. Some great lines between he and James Mason as a RN Admiral.

It was made between MR and FYEO and done with a lot of the Bond crew.

At one point, they are arranging a "fake" explosion to fool the bad guys into thinking that one of the oil platforms (named Ruth) has been destroyed - thus removing it as a threat. Mason receives a "coded" message signaling that it's all set.

Mason: "The girl who follows the law comes of age a year early tonight."

Someone asks the meaning and Moore cuts in.

"Old Testament. Ruth follows judges. Coming of age is 21, so we can expect the diversion to occur at 20:00 hours."

Mason: "I suppose you're one of those fellows who does the Times crossword in 10 minutes."

Moore: (clearly insulted) It has NEVER taken me ten minutes.

If you haven't seen it, check it out.

ooooooo yeah! I do remember that film now. I totally forgot about it, I caught it on TNT several months back at around 3:00 am or something like that. Good flick, I never did find out the title, thanks bryce! I wonder if it's out on DVD, I might consider picking it up.

THE WILD GEESE isn't bad, well, not THAT bad. Caught it on TV a couple of months ago having not seen it since childhood, and wasn't surprised to find that it really creaks (although it may well have seemed a little behind-the-times when first released).

Still, it's great for Moore fans. He plays a womanizing, devil-may-care mercenary, sharing the limelight with Richards Burton and Harris. The film was released in 1978 and was Moore's followup to THE SPY WHO LOVED ME.

I agree with ffolkes. There was some discussion of it in a thread a couple weeks ago.

Gold is decent also, and, if you want to count them, his Saint feature films The Fiction Makers (very Bond-like) and Vendetta For the Saint. These were two-part episodes strung together.

I have serveral favorite Non-Bond Roger Moore films . with the exception one one(1) film all are action-adventure films. 1) "Vendetta for the Saint"(1968) ,2)"The Man who Haunted Himself"(1970) ,3) "Gold" (1974) ,4) "That Lucky Touch"(1975) ,5) "Street People" (1976) 6) "Shout at the Devil"(1976) , 7) "The Wild Geese"(1978 -with Richard Burton) , 8) "FFolkes"(1980) . In here one of the films mention Moore gave strong performance which lead one to believe that had EON invested more into quaility scripts and directors . Instead of people like Guy Hamilton . Moore's Bond would have been far more edgier . A good example is two (2) films directed by Peter Hunt , "Gold" and "Shout at the Devil." Hunt who directed OHMSS , was one of the few directors who could get Moore to "act".

The Man Who Haunted Himself is probably his best none-Bond.

"The Saint" movies mentioned are re-edited versions of two Saint twoparters, they were I think shown as movies in Europe and the USA.

Fans of Bernard Lee should check out Moore's "Crossplot" made in '69 by mose of the "Saint" crew (Lee also pops up in an episode of Moore's Persuaders series)

"Peter Hunt also directed Moore in some episodes of "The Persuaders" "

George Baker popped up in a Peter Hunt directed episode of "The Persuaders" along with an attache case full of Fleming novels at one point with (you guessed it) a copy of OHMSS on top.

Fans of in-jokes should watch a very early, black and white episode of "The Saint" which I once come across. Co-staring the Felix Leiter from LALD and LTK, it had me in histerics as at one point, Simon Templer pretends to be James Bond to get some information :)

Remember Moore was in the running to become James Bond. David Henson was also Captain Crane , in "Voyage to The Bottom of the Sea" . A great 60's Television show. This was before he became Felix Leiter. He and Roger Moore are good friends.

Let us not forget ESCAPE TO ATHENA where Sir rog plays a Nazi. This film also stars David Niven, Elliot Gould, and Sonny Bono(!) among others. It has its charms though Rog's accent work is terrible. I was recently given a copy of the 2 DVD French Edition where it is known as BONS BAISER D'ATHENES! The company that releases it also puts out special editions of THE SAINT on DVD. Check out www.pvbeditions.com.

Then you need too go and rents some of his films. Just read the listings and some thing will jump out at you. Try "Gold" 1974 , it's directed by Peter Hunt of "OHMSS" fame . He was the only director who could get Moore to act. Plus it's a good movie that will disspell the myht that Moore was not "tough" .

Based on all the comments on this subject, I went to the store to try and find a Moore DVD.

I found The Man Who Haunted Himself. IT had a great read on the back, an excellent story to offer - and I was almost giddy when I read that Moore had a complete voice-over for the movie.

SO I bought it - and my wife and I watched the film last night.

And what a film it turned out to be!!!

The premise here is a superb one a tense thriller that is well crafted, from visuals to cast to atmosphere. The movie keeps you glued to the screen right from the start, through a mysterious adventure, and when the end credits arrive, you'll feel content with what has happened.

Moore's life is falling to pieces around him, and the movie aptly shows desperation and paranoia, so the suspense and atmosphere are covered. A superb and unwavering performance by Roger Moore, he shows he's up to that task and is able to play his role to the hilt, one of his best efforts.

My favourite line is when they talk about a company project being leaked to the competition and how it could happen. Then Roger says "Well not everything is James Bond, espionage and On Her Majesty's Secret Service."

When Roger was good, he was great!

Thanks to you all for recommending the film!

I saw a clip of him on Conan for the new movie boat trip. It looks quite good. Even though he play a gay guy.

Moore's like Brosnan is today he gave many of his best Bond like performances in other films . "Gold"(1974) , "Shout at the Devil (1976) , "FFolkes" (1980) spring to mind .

My favorite non-Bond Roger Moore movie is without a doubt "Ffolkes". It was made at about the time of "Moonraker" and was great fun. The title of the movie in the UK is "North Sea Hijack".
I am hoping it comes onto DVD one day soon.

I have to agree with "ffolkes" I'll watch that on reruns when I wont's watch AVTAK or Octopussy. ffolkes was a classic, shame Roger never did a sequel to it, it was beggin' to be made. "Shout at the Devil" I had forgotten about until someone mentioned it, very "African Queen" and a rip-roaring revenge story mixed. some of Rog's best work. Lately his villian guest spot on Alias was devinely evil, not a movie but it proves that Moore can act not just act like he's James Bond.

Not counting "Vendetta for the Saint", which is a 2 part episode edited together, I'd have to say "Gold", "Sea Wolves"(he breaks a baddie's neck in that one), "Street People", "Cannonball Run", "Wild Geese", "Man who Haunted Himself", "Bed & Breakfast", and "Crossplot". I have yet to see "Gold of the Seven Saints", "Sunday Lovers", and No Man's Land".

I would have loved to have seen that...I'm not sure "Ffolkes" made enough at the box office though -- many people were probably taken off guard by the very gruff title character.
Still its a very good and exciting action movie and the supporting cast (James Mason, Anthony Perkins and David Hedison) was awesome.

Has anyone seen Fire, Ice and Dynamite?

I think it was directed by Willy Bognor, I saw a poster for it at the time (AVTAK-ish) but never saw it released anywhere. I think it was supposed to be full of action - well, it was Bognor so....

Was it any good?

My favorites have to be:

1.) THE SEA WOLVES also starring Gregory Peck, David Niven, and Patrick Macnee

2.) THE FICTION MAKERS and 3.) VENDETTA FOR THE SAINT - You can never go wrong with Roger as the Saint. Truly enjoyable!
