A couple of Jinx's one liners sucked but Frost, even though not portrayed enough, was awesome, with stunning lines and an amazing mind. She was playing Graves side but we assumed she was playing both sides. Her character seems to be much smarter than Jinx's and she just did a better job.
Absolutely. Frost is one of the sexiest Bond girls ever, and it's a tragedy that she has so little screentime. How I wish she'd been able to kill Jinx at the end and escape scot free (as a sort of 21st century Irma Bunt)....

For starters, Rosamund Pike is just gorgeous, and she can act too. Halle Berry is a terrible actress. Her winning that oscar shows how corrupt that awards show is.
Frost by a landslide. I think she's the most attractive Bond girl in a while.
Jinx was just so stupid in that laser scene. "A little help her?" C'mon. Did anyone else find that scene to completely lame and moronic?

First of all, Halle Berry is one of the most gorgeous women working in films today. She looks amazing in a bikini and her face is flawless. Secondly, she is a fine actress, and I'll wager that those who say she didn't deserve her Oscar didn't even see Monster's Ball. She acquitted herself brilliantly in a very challenging role.
I loved how Jinx was a tough spy, yet had a sweet personality. The two times she "ran into" James unexpectedly, first at the clinic and then at the Ice Palace, she said "James!" in a cheerful and disarming voice. She didn't have that hostile, defensive thing that other female spies have always shown. She had almost an openness about her that was entirely surprising and I found it very appealing. Clearly, she used that very quality, that apparent vulnerability, against the doctor in Cuba, yet it was also a sincere part of her.
Rosamund Pike seems an extremely able actress, and it is no mean trick holding your own in the company of such pros. But the part was too one-dimensional. As my son said, she was a bitch before she turned, then a bitch after she turned -- no arc, no interest.
Some people are excited by the "ice queen," by the unattainable woman, but she is an essentially shallow person.
What I loved was how Jinx and Frost played as opposites -- like a pair of opposing chess pieces.

I saw Berry in Monster's Ball, Spacek in In the Bedroom, & Kidman in Moulin Rouge, and Berry definitely came in third...her acting was easily one of the most over-the-top performances ever. She only won for political reasons; critics noted that before & after the awards. When a celebrity almost murders someone and then triumphantly denies & gets away with it, they're destined to get rewarded...

I beg to differ. I saw Berry, Spacek, Kidman, and Zellwegger in Bridget Jones's Diary as well, missing only Dench's performance in Iris.Originally posted by Adam

Spacek gave a subtle and nuanced performance in a lifeless film. Kidman I cannot understand being nominated for this picture, her performance in The Others the same year was superior. Zellwegger's performance was a comic masterpiece, but comedic performances have rarely been awarded.
But Berry ripped her heart out. She was vulnerable, brave, stupid, lost, and found. She bared her soul before the camera and never for a moment hid behind the beauty queen persona.
"Critics" may have "noted" that Berry's award was "political," whatever that means. Critics don't give the Academy Award, members of the Academy do. Their vagaries are often mysterious and unpredictable. But there is no meeting of the Academy, no vast conspiracy. Each member votes individually, privately, and mails his or her ballot in. After it's all over, people who weren't a part of the voting may natter about why they think this or that person or film did or didn't win, but they don't know for a fact. For my money, they saw a brilliant performance and they voted from the gut.

Regarding looks, I saw both girls at the London premiere - indeed I was 3 metres away from both and they both were equally stunning for entirely different reasons.
Halle actually looks better in the flesh than on screen - utterly stunning in ways that you thought were just not possible.
Pyke is a different entity entirely with her cool delivery.
They are both gorgeous, but just at opposite ends of the beauty spectrum, hot to cool.

Miranda's character could have been more, but she didn't stoop to the level that Jinx did.
I envision an Icebreaker scenario for Bond, Jinx, and Frost: each girl would confide in Bond, but distrust each other, but in the end, Jinx is not the traitor. Or Miranda would work just as well...John Gardner was so good at fooling the reader.
